Yeti is best known for its rugged outdoor gear. Offering some of the best coolers, drinkware and camping supplies, it’s no surprise that so many folks turn to Yeti when the weather warms up. But the brand has more than just beach-ready essentials like the Yeti Tundra cooler. It also has cups, water bottles and other products you can use year-roundlike the Yeti Rambler coffee tumbler, which is one of the most popular travel mugs on the market. Its cult-favorite status stems from its stylish shades, impressive reputation and seemingly unparalleled temperature regulation.

Yeti coffee tumblers, like the Rambler, are double walled and vacuum insulated. This is a big win, according to Erin Doern, coffee expert and Head of Product Development at Free Rein Coffee. When choosing a coffee tumbler, look for one with a vacuum-insulated, double-wall exterior to maintain your coffees temperature longer,” she says. Because of the Rambler’s heavy-duty construction, it’s clear that it talks the talk when it comes to keeping beverages steamy. But does it walk the walk when compared to other best-loved coffee tumblers out there?

To determine whether this pricey pick is actually worth the splurge, our Product Testing Team tried the Yeti Rambler 20-ounce coffee tumbler alongside 20 other coffee tumblers. We evaluated factors like heat retention, leakproof capabilities and overall performance. After analyzing our results, here’s how Yeti stands up to the competition.

What Is the Yeti Rambler Coffee Tumbler?

Yeti offers dozens of different drinkware options for every type of beverage lover, from wine tumblers to water bottles. The Yeti Rambler is arguably their best seller. It touts itself as the quintessential coffee tumbler for on-the-go sipping. It’s such a hit that Yeti has come out with a number of add-ons and accessories for it, including a cocktail shaker lid, additional MagSlider magnetsfor the lid and a straw lid for cold drinks.

Available in 10 seasonal colors and eight core shades, the Yeti Rambler is a good-looking travel cup that’s worthy of the best organic coffees. Shoppers can even customize their tumbler with their own designs, monograms and text. They can also select one of the many pre-made designs available in the customization gallery for an additional fee. The Rambler comes in a wide strata of sizes, including modest 10-ounce, medium 20-ounce and oversized 30-ounce options.

Best of all, Yeti claims that its double-wall insulation works for more than just hot beverages. According to the website, even chilly drinks like iced coffee and water stay temperature regulated for several hours. Bring on the iced coffee concentrates! While Yeti doesn’t claim the Rambler drinkware to be leakproof, it does claim that it has “fallen off of trucks, down rocky hillsides and even been kicked by a horse and lived to tell the tale.” In short, these are some seriously durable tumblers.

The Yeti Rambler coffee tumbler is stylish, insulated and rugged enough for every outdoor adventure.

How We Testedthe Yeti Rambler Coffee Tumbler

Our search for the best coffee tumblers took our expert Product Testing Team into uncharted territory. We tested more than 20 tumblers from popular brands and more nichealbeit well-reviewedshops. Product Tester (and caffeine fiend) Sheri Kaz created rigid standards and subjected each travel coffee mug to the same 11 tests to see which performed the best overall. Sheri collected over 730 data points and spent an estimated 50 hours on the test. This includes the time it took to research, source, intake and test the products.

To thoroughly evaluate each option, Sheri conducted tests in the following categories:

  • Temperature Retention
  • Drinking Experience
  • Ergonomics/Handling
  • Leakproof Capabilities
  • Durability
  • Specs
  • Cleaning
  • Lead Detection

From there, we used this data to compare options and write this Yeti Rambler review.

Testing Team Evaluation

When it comes to drinking experience, the Yeti Rambler is one of our top picks. The tumbler is made of stainless steel with a double-walled, vacuum-insulated interior. The splash-resistant MagSlider lid is slim and comfortable for drinking. Our tester found the rounded edges don’t bump or poke your mouth during sips.

Toha24 Annamarie Higley Yeti Rambler Coffee Tumbler Ssedit 01

There is a sizable tab to help lift the clear plastic lid off the cup. It easily glides on and off without an issue, which is a plus in terms of user friendliness (yet a minus when it comes to securitymore on that in a minute). The sliding mechanism works better than expected. It’s always either open or closed without any chance of an accidental half-open mishap. While not leakproof (and it doesn’t tout itself to be), the lid stayed on surprisingly well when we shook the cup upside down.

That said, there are a few areas where the tumbler doesn’t meet our expectations. The biggest disappointment of the Rambler is its poor performance in the thermal retention tests. While it kept hot coffee fairly warm at around 100.5 degrees Fahrenheit after six hours, it measured in at 39.5 degrees Fahrenheit with no ice left after four hours during our cold water test. After six hours, it measured at 44.5 degrees Fahrenheitnot very impressive.

Despite touting itself as cupholder-friendly, the 20-ounce size is too large for small cupholders and doesn’t fit securely in Sheri’s large cupholder, either. Additionally, the smooth, wider profile doesn’t quite feel secure in hand and seems easy to drop. However, if you drop it, rest assured that it really only sustains minimal damage to the body. Trust uswe hurled the thing. That said, the top doesn’t screw on, so expect to lose your lid (and thus your latte) in case of a mishap.

Final Verdict

While it didn’t make the final cut in our list of the top eight coffee tumblers, the Yeti Rambler coffee tumbler still offers a solid sipping experience. It also by no means performed the worst out of the 21 options we tested. If you’re looking for a stylish tumbler to carry around your coveted Cometeer coffee and you’re not super concerned about drops, this pick will do the trick.

Thanks to its vast array of shades and sizes, it’s the quintessential cup if you want to look cool during your commute. It also boasts a five-year warranty, bolstering its slightly higher price point. It doesn’t retain the chill as well with iced or cold brew coffee as some of the other tumblers we tested. However, there’s no danger of it splashing everywhere as you walk around. Just don’t expect zero drips or dribbles if it bounces around in a backpack.

Tester Sheri sums it up well: “The Yeti was a bit of a disappointment compared to others, but ultimately, it works as a commuter tumbler.”

Pros

  • Nice color options
  • Pleasant drinking experience
  • Made by a trusted brand
  • Five-year warranty
  • Dishwasher safe

Cons

  • Leaky
  • Not cupholder compatible

We tested both—here are the results.

Hydro Flask Vs. Yeti

The beauty of single-serve coffee makers is that you get a near-instant cup that’s ready to grab on the way out the door in the morning. But when it comes time to take your fresh brew on the go, you need a travel coffee tumbler that keeps the heat (or chill) inside. This is especially important on brisk winter mornings or sweltering summer afternoons.

When choosing a tumbler, look for one with a vacuum-insulated, double-wall exterior to maintain your coffees temperature longer, says Erin Doern, coffee expert and Head of Product Development at Free Rein Coffee. After all, nothing is worse than taking a sip of your iced brew only to be met with a watery, room-temperature coffee.

As for the best coffee tumblers, two brands are almost always at the forefront of the discussion: YETI and Hydro Flask. While both offer an impressive line-up of travel-friendly options, the Hydro Flask vs. YETI debate goes a lot deeper than that. Our Product Testing Team compared each brand’s most popular coffee tumblers to determine which one is the best.

Whats the Difference Between Hydro Flask and YETI?

When looking at all the items each brand offers, it’s easy to see why the Hydro Flask vs. YETI debate is so heated. Both brands boast an array of outdoor gear, mainly focused on drinkware like coffee thermoses and wine tumblers. Both have a loyal following, and both offer generous warranties on most items. Collectively, the two brands also have some of the best coolers, camping supplies and outdoor cookware.

One of the big differences between Hydro Flask and YETI is the price point of their products. The 20-ounce Hydro Flask tumblers cost around $27 compared to the 20-ounce YETIs, which are $35. While this isn’t a big gap, it’s sizable enough to make you wonder which is a better option. The price difference is even more pronounced with their soft coolers. While Hydro Flask’s cooler tote rings up at an affordable $65, the YETI counterpart comes in at a staggering $300. That’s pretty substantial.

All About Hydro Flask

Travis Rosbach and Cindy Weber established Steel Technology, LLC in 2009. The brand, which later became Hydro Flask, was based in the mountainous and lush region of Bend, Oregon. Hydro Flask began selling water bottles at local farmers markets, where they quickly grew a following in the outdoor community. In 2012, the company started producing a wider variety of products in Europe as well as the United States. Now, Hydro Flask sells over 100 different products, including drinkware, coolers, kitchenware and outdoorsy accessories.

How We Tested Hydro Flask

Our expert Product Testing Team tested 20 coffee tumblers using the same 11 tests. They collected over 730 data points and spent an estimated 50 hours on the tests, including the time it took to research, source, intake and test the products. To keep things fair for the Hydro Flask vs. YETI comparison, we compared the two most closely related products from each brand. For Hydro Flask, we conducted tests on the All Around Tumbler.

The Product Testing Team has a combined decade of experience testing and evaluating products, especially from popular brands. We use fair and honest testing practices under controlled conditions for each test. Our team has thoroughly evaluated everything from food processorstoceramic cookwarein our dedicated Testing Lab. We also put every product through a thoroughtesting processthat ensures accurate, quality results.

Criteria

  • Temperature Retention:Testers place 140-degree Fahrenheit water in each tumbler, then measure the temperature after four hours to see how much it fell. All tumblers are left in the refrigerator to simulate a near-freezing day. Testers then fill each tumbler halfway with ice and add 60-degree Fahrenheit water until full. They measure the temperature after another four hours to see how much it rose and if any ice remains. All tumblers are left outside in the sun.
  • Drinking Experience:Testers drink liquid from the tumbler. They evaluate the pleasantness and ease of the drinking experience, monitoring things like lip thickness, opening placement and flow.
  • Ergonomics and Handling: Testers attempt to place the tumbler in a standard car cupholder to see if it fits. If the tumbler has a pop top, testers open the lid five times in rapid succession to gauge how cumbersome it is to open and close and how tiring it is on the hand. Testers then carry each filled tumbler around for five minutes to assess its weight and circumference and how comfortable it is to hold.
  • Leakproof Capabilities: Testers shake each tumbler upside down for 15 seconds to see if and how much the cup leaks.
  • Durability:Testers push the tumbler from a hip-height ledge onto the pavement to see if it scratches, spills, dents or pops open.
  • Specs:Testers weigh each empty tumbler and note any additional features.
  • Cleaning:Testers wash each tumbler in the dishwasher up to three times, noting its appearance and cleanliness after the fact. They turn off the heat for all of these cycles to preserve the silicone and plastic parts.
  • Lead Detection:Testers swab the inside of each tumbler and test for the presence of lead with a rapid lead test kit.

Pros

  • Dishwasher-safe
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Budget-friendly
  • Pleasant drinking experience
  • Lots of fun colors and shades
  • Free of any lead

Cons

  • Leaky
  • Not cupholder compatible
  • Subpar thermal capabilities

Temperature Retention

Hydroflask Temperature Retention

As with the rest of the coffee tumblers we tested, we used cold tap water on ice for our iced coffee test. After four hours in direct sunlight, the “coffee” measured at 40.1 degrees Fahrenheit, and all the ice was melted. After six hours, the beverage measured in at 46.5 degrees Fahrenheit. While the melted ice is a bit of a bummer, folks can easily circumvent this by adding refrigerated water rather than cold tap water. This should make the ice last longer.

For the hot coffee test, the coffee temperature fell to 94.6 degrees Fahrenheit after six hoursstill pretty impressive, albeit much lower than the original temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

Drinking Experience

The Hydro Flask All Around Tumbler has a BPA-free plastic push-on lid. The tab on the lid is very small and harder to push up or down than some others, but it also seals quite wellmore on that in a minute. It has a sliding spout to easily open and close the lid. This makes the overall drinking experience very smooth, with no rough or squared-off edges anywhere. The rim is stainless, which feels nice on the lips.

Ergonomics and Handling

The exterior of the Hydro Flask has a little texture for added gripa feature that put its score above the YETI for handling. It’s not as wide or slick as the YETI, so it feels more comfortable to hold, but it’s still pretty fat and difficult for smaller hands to grip. For those who prefer something that they can hold for hours at a time, this is a slightly better option.

It is mostly cupholder-friendly. While it’s too wide for smaller cupholders, it fits larger ones flawlessly. Those who plan on commuting and are worried about the fit can invest in a handy cup holder expander to ensure a secure fit.

Leakproof Capabilities

Despite the tight-fitting lid, this tumbler is very, very leaky. When it is held upside down, a consistent stream spills out. As a result, it’s not a great option for backpacks and bumpy bus rides.

Durability

Hydroflask Durability

While this pick performed decently in the drop test, it received a small dent near the bottom and the stainless ridge on the top. However, the lid stayed on and there were no other visible scratches.

Cleaning

A wide mouth makes it easy to clean the interior, and the tumbler and lid are both dishwasher-safe.

Specs

The All Around Tumbler from Hydro Flask comes in four sizes: 12, 16, 20, and 28 ounces. A 20-ounce option with a straw lid instead of the standard sliding lid is also available, along with a larger 40-ounce tumbler with a handle for easier travel. The 20-ounce option we tested weighed in at around 0.65 pounds. It’s made from BPA-free materials, including stainless steel.

Each size comes in a variety of color options, including green, grey, black, lilac, blue, teal, dark green, red, dark blue, pink and white. Hydro Flask also comes out with limited edition colors and patterns on a rolling basis throughout the year. Similar to how Stanley has a bunch of cup accessories, Hydro Flask offers a bevy of bottle accessories on the site. These include bottle boots, straw sets and alternative lids.

Lead Detection

Hydroflask Lead Detection

Hydro Flask is one of the only vacuum-insulated tumbler brands on the market that doesn’t contain lead as part of the sealing process. This differs from the industry standard, making it appealing to those who worry about lead exposure.

Our Favorite Hydro Flask Products

Hydro Flask All Around Tumbler

Boasting a stainless steel rim and dozens of color options, the Hydro Flask All Around Tumbler is a stylish alternative to boring tumblers.

Hydro Flask All Around Travel Tumbler

Like the popular Stanley Quencher, the Hydro Flask All Around Travel Tumbler has a straw lid and handle, making it a great option for outdoor excursions.

FAQ

Why is a Hydro Flask so expensive?

Hydro Flask tumblers are durable and offer double-walled insulation. Hydro Flask is also one of the only tumbler brands to use non-lead sealing processes, which makes them a favorite among those who are looking for lead-free drinkware. Because of that, they’re a little priceybut we find them well worth the splurge.

All About YETI

Brothers Roy and Ryan Seiders founded YETI Coolers, LLC in 2006. As the name implies, YETI began its foray into outdoor gear as a cooler business focused on meeting the demands of fishermen in the Texas heat. The brand has since expanded into other categories, including coffee tumblers, outdoor blankets, pet items and even apparel. All of their offerings focus on durability and longevity, though they’ve also built a reputation for having some of the sleekest gear around.

How We Tested YETI

To keep things fair for the Hydro Flask vs. YETI comparison, we subjected the YETI coffee tumbler to the same 11 tests as the Hydro Flask tumbler. The Product Testing Team conducted tests on the YETI Rambler 20-ounce tumbler.

Temperature Retention

Similarly to the Hydro Flask tests, the YETI’s iced coffee test yielded decent results, though the tumbler didn’t succeed in retaining any ice after four hours in the sun. At four hours, the ice water in the YETI Rambler measured in at 39.5 degrees Fahrenheit against Hydro Flask’s 40.1 degrees Fahrenheit. The six-hour results were similar, with YETI’s 44.5 degrees Fahrenheit against Hydro Flask’s 46.5 degrees Fahrenheit.

The YETI fared a bit better in the hot coffee test, clocking in at 100.5 degrees Fahrenheit against Hydro Flask’s lukewarm 94.6 degrees Fahrenheit. In this part of the Hydro Flask vs. YETI test, YETI comes out on top by a minimal margin.

Drinking Experience

Like the Hydro Flask tumbler, the YETI Rambler boasts nice, rounded edges. The cup has a stainless rim that meets the lips. The lid is slim and comfortable to drink from, and the clear plastic slide-on lid includes a sliding spout. There is a sizable tab to help lift the lid off the cup. It easily glides on and off without an issue. The sliding mechanism works better than expected because it’s either open or closed without an in-between half-open mishap.

Ergonomics and Handling

This is one area where the YETI doesn’t outperform the Hydro Flask. The tumbler has a wide profile, which is visually appealing, but our testing team is not a fan. It’s a bit difficult to fit into smaller hands. Additionally, the exterior is very smooth, making it easier to drop than others we tested. Fortunately, there’s some texture on the tumbler that helps a little with grip.

Despite being touted as cupholder friendly, it doesn’t fit securely in a large cupholder and doesn’t fit in a small one at all. That’s a definite con for commuters, as even a cupholder expander won’t help in this regard.

Leakproof Capabilities

While it’s definitely not leakproof, the lid stays on while shaking it upside down. That’s a good thing in case you take this tumbler to the backwoods trails and don’t want to lose your lid.

Durability

YETI prides itself on being one of the most rugged, durable outdoor brands. During our drop test, we found the Rambler lived up to the brand’s reputation. While the lid popped off upon contact with concrete, it only received minor damage to the bottom rim. That’s pretty impressive!

Cleaning

This is on par with the Hydro Flask. It’s dishwasher-safe and it offers a wide mouth for easy hand washing.

Specs

The YETI Rambler is a handsome cup available in 10-, 20- and 30-ounce sizes. The team tested the 20-ounce version, which weighs around 0.85 poundsjust a hair heavier than Hydro Flask’s tumbler. It comes in a fleet of core shades, including pink, navy, red, black, grey, white, teal and stainless. There are also quite a few seasonal shades: fuchsia, yellow, green, blue, green teal, orange, light pink, lilac and dark green.

A coffee tumbler has become something of a fashion accessory in and of itself, and YETI offers additional accouterments to make each cup your own. Tumbler accessories include everything from replacement mag sliders and straw lids to bottle slings and cocktail shaker attachments.

Lead Detection

While the risk of contamination is low, YETI confirms their vacuum-insulated tumblers contain a small amount of lead inside the bottom of the cup, similar to Stanley. That said, the lead doesn’t come into contact with any exposed surfaces, and our at-home lead detection kit didn’t pick up any trace of lead.

Pros

  • Nice color options
  • Pleasant drinking experience
  • Made by a trusted brand
  • Five-year warranty
  • Dishwasher-safe

Cons

  • Leaky
  • Not compatible with cupholders

Our Favorite YETI Products

YETI Rambler Coffee Tumbler

The YETI Rambler coffee tumbler is a colorful, attractive option for those who want to take their coffee with them in style.

YETI Tundra 45 Hard Cooler

The YETI cooler offers unparalleled ice retention and style. Use it as a camping ice chest for up to four folks or pop in drinks for a day on the water.

FAQ

Why is the YETI so expensive?

YETI products come with a generous five-year warranty and offer rugged builds meant for the backwoods. Because of the high quality, expect to pay a bit more for YETI.

Is YETI or Stanley better?

Our Product Testing Team tried both the Stanley Aerolight travel tumbler and the YETI Rambler. Based on our 11 tests, the best option for traveling in extreme weather is Stanley. It offers the best insulation of the bunch, keeping the coffee temperature regulated for up to six hours. Plus, its leakproof lid makes it a top pick for travelers. That said, the YETI is by no means a bad option if you plan to enjoy your coffee right away.

How long will ice stay in a YETI tumbler?

According to our tests, ice doesn’t last very long in a YETI Rambler tumbler on a hot day. When we checked in our tumbler after four hours, the water measured 39.5 degrees Fahrenheit and had no ice left.

The Bottom Line: Hydro Flask vs. YETI

In terms of drinking experience, Hydro Flask and YETI are tied. Both offer a sliding spout lid that works flawlessly and feels comfortable and pleasant on the lips. However, the Hydro Flask’s lid is a bit harder to remove and drips continuously while held upside down. That said, we don’t recommend tossing either one into a bagthey’re both rather leaky.

While each brand performed similarly in temperature retention, YETI surpassed Hydro Flask by a minimal margin in both the cold and hot coffee tests. For those who plan on trekking through extreme temperatures, we recommend going with the YETI. However, if you’re planning a road trip, the Hydro Flask is the only tumbler that actually fits into cup holders.

When it comes down to the nitty-gritty of Hydro Flask vs. YETI, the best option ends up being the one that works best for you. Despite both brands performing very similarly, there are pros and cons for each. Consider your specific needs and what will fit your lifestyle.

Subscription boxes come in a number of varieties that fit nearly every interest. These days, you can secure candle clubs, cookie of the month boxes and even wine subscriptions through dozens of different online services. There’s something to be said about receiving a monthly shipment that resonates with your interests. They also make excellent gifts for family and friendsespecially food-based ones like our beloved Goldbelly subscription. But when it comes to subscription gifts, nothing quite excites me like a hobby-related pick. Enter: puzzle of the month clubs.

According to Jodi Jill, founder of National Puzzle Day and professional puzzle maker, a puzzle of the month club is a great way to explore the hobby without feeling overwhelmed. “Picking one jigsaw puzzle when at the store is sometimes hard, especially when you have a bunch you’d love to play,” she says. “Having a puzzle of the month club is a great way to budget your entertainment expenses (and reduce your temptations of buying too many jigsaw puzzles). A puzzle of the month club is also an awesome way to share your love of jigsaw puzzles with another puzzle enthusiast. I have given this gift in the past, and they call me every month to share their fun.”

With so many options available, our team of hobbyists tried three different options to see which puzzle of the month clubs are worth the splurge. While all were fun in their own right, one option completely blew us away: the Jiggy Puzzle Club.

What is a puzzle of the month club?

Toha24 Puzzle Of The Month Club Emily Way 03 Ssedit

Puzzle of the month clubs, similar to gift of the month clubs, are essentially puzzle subscription boxes. Once you sign up for the service, a new puzzle automatically ships to you each month. Some puzzle subscriptions, like White Mountain, allow you to choose your own puzzles and deliver bi-monthly. Others, like Mary Maxim, offer two surprise puzzles each month.

When shopping for a puzzle of the month club, Jodi recommends keeping a few factors top of mind. “Art is the most important part of a puzzle,” she says. “If you think about it, when we solve a puzzle, it’s a relaxing emotional journey where you challenge yourself piece by piece. A great jigsaw puzzle starts with delightful art. When looking at options for a puzzle subscription, consider how the art feels to you. Do you like landscapes? Bright colors? Or subtle visions? The sky’s the limit as there are so many great puzzle companies that produce amazing images.”

What is Jiggy?

Jiggy is a puzzle company that rose to fame after appearing on Shark Tank in 2019. Growing substantially during the pivotal pandemic lockdown, Jiggy is now one of the biggest names in the world of jigsaw puzzles. This female-founded company specializes in artful, modern designs rather than classic works and compilations. Jiggy often partners with artists, collaborating on unique and gorgeous designs that are worthy of being framed and enjoyed throughout the years.

Jiggy’s art doesn’t just extend to artistic prints, either. Brands can collaborate with Jiggy to create their own jigsaw puzzles.Jiggy also offers apersonalization option for those who prefer to turn theirart or photos into jigsaw masterpieces.

How We Tested It

Toha24 Puzzle Of The Month Club Emily Way 04 Ssedit

We tested Jiggy’s puzzle club byhow else?trying it ourselves! As a puzzle hobbyist who completes at least one puzzle per quarter, Jiggy’s 500-piece puzzle club appealed to me. When it arrived, I was stunned by how giftable the box was once it was outside the confines of its cardboard exterior. Each puzzle comes in a sleek branded box wrapped with a paper sleeve. The sleeve has the artwork for the puzzle printed on ita cute preview of what’s inside.

Inside the box is a reusable pouch containing a sealed bag filled with pieces, plus a card with the puzzle art on one side and an in-depth description of the artist on the other. There’s also a handy QR code if you want to view the artist’s other pieces. My box contained artwork by Maggie Stephenson. I loved reading about her artwork and flipping through her digital profile to see what other pieces she created. It’s like receiving a little box of insight into an artist’s mind!

As for the puzzle itself, I found it an absolute joy to put together. While the experience differs depending on the artwork chosen, that’s the beauty of puzzle clubs. Given the bright colors and bold contrasts of Maggie’s work, I actually found this a bit less intimidating than other 500-piece puzzles I’ve put together. Each piece is accounted for, and by the end of the puzzle, I could definitely see why Jiggy prides itself on its frame-ready artwork. The final product is absolutely gorgeous!

Pros

  • Gorgeous, frameable prints
  • Exclusive puzzles
  • Purchase supports artists
  • Comes with a drawstring bag
  • Early access to new products

Cons

  • A bit pricey, but worth it
  • No customization options

Those who enjoy framing their finished products will find Jiggy well worth the price. These modern art prints offer a quality that you can’t find anywhere else. Each puzzle comes with its own reusable drawstring bag, making it super easy to keep your pieces together throughout the process.

Are puzzle subscriptions worth it?

According to Jodi, puzzle subscriptions are a great investment for folks who enjoy the relaxing nature of the hobby. “A puzzle of the month club is a great way to remind yourself you need some self-care,” she says.”If you love jigsaw puzzles and your life is busy, knowing you have a jigsaw puzzle coming to your door means you need to schedule YOU time!”

Other Puzzle Subscriptions We Tested

In addition to Jiggy’s puzzle club, we also tried Mary Maxim‘s puzzle subscription and White Mountain‘s monthly puzzle subscription box. Of these options, Jiggy falls into the mid-price range, ringing up at around $35 per month next to White Mountain’s $40 per month subscription and Mary Maxim’s $17 per month option.

White Mountain

While we enjoyed the White Mountain puzzle subscription for its wide variety of options, we felt the price was steep. Additionally, this service sends two puzzles bimonthly rather than one or two puzzles per month, which may not work for everyone.

This is also a service where you choose your own puzzles from a preset pool of options rather than offering a surprise puzzle each month. There are no additional savings or any benefits included, either. Because of this, we felt that it differed very little from simply purchasing two puzzles each month.

Mary Maxim

Mary Maxim’s puzzle subscription is an amazing deal at around $17 monthly. Each month, members receive two surprise puzzles in their choice of 300-piece, 500-piece or 1000-piece options. Puzzles come from various brands, meaning that no two months are the same. We love the ability to customize each option based on skill level, and each subscription is the same price across the board.

For my one-month subscription, I received a train puzzle and a “love shack” beach puzzle, both of which are 500-piece puzzles. Personally, I enjoy the surprise aspectit feels like receiving a gift each month. While the art styles aren’t what I’d usually go for (and they’re not bespoke like Jiggy’s), it was fun putting together puzzles that fell a little outside of my comfort zone. For folks who go through a lot of puzzles, this is a great opportunity to save some money while enjoying your relaxing hobby. The ability to customize it to your skill level is a bonus!

Final Verdict

For those who enjoy traditional jigsaw puzzles with classic art, Jiggy may not be for you. But if you appreciate more modern prints and want to frame your puzzles after completion, Jiggy’s puzzle of the month club is an amazing deal. Each piece of art is gorgeous, colorful and a total joy to put together. The bonuses that come with the puzzle subscription are well worth the price, especially given that a percentage of each purchase goes directly to the artist. If you’re a hobbyist or want to find the perfect gift for the puzzle lover in your life, you can’t go wrong with a prepaid Jiggy puzzle subscription.

There’s nothing wrong with storing soup containers and make-ahead dinners in the freezer. In fact, meal prepping is our favorite life hack that cuts down on the dinnertime rush. However, overstuffing the freezer is a surefire way to give yourself a headache. Not only does it usher in more freezer burn and lead to poor temperature consistency, but it can also prevent the freezer door from fully sealing. This uses up more energy in the long run (and can lead to spoilage and melted ice cubesick!). That’s why stand-alone freezerslike the Hamilton Beach upright freezerare a lifesaver for excess storage.

“According to the Department of Energy, 34% of American households have a second fridge or freezer. Auxiliary food storage space has always been sought after for large families and homes that like to entertainyet the pandemic popularized this trend and made it mainstream,” says Jessica Petrino, educator and appliance expert at AJ Madison. “An upright freezer is a great space-saving way to store more food. They’re perfect for small storage areas such as a pantry, garage or basement. Stock up on food at the store, buy protein in bulk, stash milk for a baby or flash freeze your favorite dinners, soup or sauces for later.”

Executive Culinary DirectorSarah Farmer, who tested six upright freezers to find the very best, agrees. Vertical freezers offer a more compact design while providing the same storage capacity as chest freezers, she explains. Here’s why our Test Kitchen recommends the Hamilton Beach freezer for garages, basements and other places with regular temperature fluctuations.

What isthe Hamilton Beach upright freezer?

If you’re unsure whether you want achest or upright freezer, the bells and whistles on theHamilton Beach freezer will almost certainlysway your opinion. A whopping 14 cubic feet of space is plenty of room for storing cookies, freezer organization products and frozen pizzas. This comes in the form of four removable tempered glass shelves, four shallow in-door shelves and a bottom slide-out bin. Do you need more fridge space? No worriesthis two-in-one option can convert to a fridge, too. Additionally, the Hamilton Beach upright freezer is garage-ready, meaning that it’s rated for fluctuations in temperatures between 0F and 110F.

It’s also self-defrosting, so you won’t have to worry about frost coating your shelves or freezer containers. This also makes it easy to clean your freezer. A handy temperature control panel sits on the door, so you can easily see how cool it is at a glance. This feature also eliminates the need to open the door to make adjustmentsbonus! Two adjustable legs allow for the freezer to sit level, and interior LED lights simplify making selections in low-light conditions.

How We Testedthe Hamilton Beach Upright Freezer

To find the best upright freezers for garages, basements and rec rooms, we identified top-selling models from the most popular brands, including Whirlpool, GE, Hotpoint, Hamilton Beach, Maytag and Gladiator. Our tester is Executive Culinary DirectorSarah Farmer, an appliance and kitchen expert.Sarah gathered six models to test, focusing on the best-reviewed picks.

During our evaluation, she looked at temperature settings, capacity and storage, noise level, durability, build quality and design. We also noted whether each pick is garage-ready and if there are any additional features, like self-defrost, reversible doors, alarms, interior lighting and adjustable leveling legs.

After thoroughly testing each potential inclusion and noting over 65 data points across all six freezers, our Test Kitchen pinpointed three top performers and two other solid options worth considering.

Hamilton Beach Upright Freezer

The Hamilton Beach upright freezer boasts a simple, handsome look. With a classic white finish and a single control panel in the center, it feels both modern and basic enough for most decor styles. The handle is recessed (making the door non-reversible), which also gives it a cleaner look.

The seal is very effectivealmost to the point where you need to give the freezer a good tug for it to open. Testers had to exert pressure, and it took about two tugs to open the door. In the event that it doesn’t seal closed, a three-minute alarm alerts you when the door remains open. The freezer features four preset temperature modes: Fridge, Subzero, Freeze and FastFreeze.

Both the shelves and lower freezer bin are solid and sturdy. However, the freezer door bins are somewhat lightweight (though not flimsy). Overall, Sarah feels that this is a perfect pick for families who want a little extra storage room for ice pops, frozen meals and bulk meats.

FAQ

Hamilton Beach Upright Freezer

Is the Hamilton Beach Upright Freezer garage ready?

Not all upright freezers are garage-friendly. They must resist very low temperatures and often have thicker insulation than their indoor counterparts. Luckily, the Hamilton Beach upright freezer is rated for temperatures 0F to 110F, making it the perfect pick for places like the garage with fluctuating temperatures.

Why should you get a frost-free freezer?

According to Jessica, one popular trait in upright freezers is an automatic defrost. “For low maintenance, better efficiency and performance, look for a freezer that will defrost automatically,” she says. “Otherwise, you must remove all the food from the freezer a few times yearly, unplug the freezer, and let ice accumulation melt. Defrosting a freezer can be a messy and labor-intensive process. Skip the extra work and get one that will defrost automatically.”

What makes a freezer “garage-friendly”?

Jessica notes that if you plan to place your freezer in an area of the home that experiences seasonal changes, it’s important to spring for a garage-ready fridge or freezer. Sometimes, the garage-ready accessory is a part sold separately on select models, but freezers often offer this as a built-in feature.

“How do you know if you need it? To put it simply, if you place a refrigerator or freezer in an area where the temperature dips colder than the temperature setting inside the fridge, it will stop ‘refrigerating,'” she says. “Therefore, outdoor fridges, or ‘garage-ready’ units, have a special feature that tricks the appliance into thinking the outside air temperature is always warmer than the temp setting of the appliance. In short, if you live in a cold weather climate and plan to place a freezer in your garage, porch or shed, its recommended to seek a garage-friendly unit.”

Whirlpool Upright Freezer Review: This Locking Freezer Offers Peace of Mind https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/whirlpool-upright-freezer-review/ Mon, 05 Aug 2024 15:57:17 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2020969 The Whirpool upright freezer locks for security and offers a lot of space—more than enough for a quarter of a cow, according to tests!

While there’s a time and place for chest freezers, they’re oftentimes meant for long-term storage rather than quick-grab meals and frosty treats. Being horizontal, they’re rather tricky to rummage through, and they normally boast deep-freeze temperatures. Because of this, they’re not the ideal solution for stashing make-ahead dinners or popping into a basement for fast access to frozen pizzas. That’s where the best upright freezers come in.

After testing six different options, the Whirlpool frost-free upright freezer impressed our Test Kitchen thanks to its performance and features. It offers peace of mind for those who worry about an unsecured seal, along with additional bells and whistles that make it one of our top picks. Here’s why we love this handy meal storage sidekick for soup containers, meal prep and beyond.

What isthe Whirlpool Upright Freezer?

The Whirlpool upright freezer looks a lot like a traditional refrigerator. With 16 cubic feet of interior space, this upright Whirlpool freezer easily fits into narrow places while still offering plenty of space for freezer containers. It’s the perfect option for slipping into basement rec rooms, kitchen corners and other small areas. Three freeze settings are indicated with snowflake icons that vary in shade from lighter to darker, determining how cold it gets inside. It even has a “Fast Freeze” option that quickly cools items for better nutritional preservation.

In addition, this Whirlpool standing freezer is frost-free, meaning that it won’t collect any frost on the interior. This also limits the amount of freezer burn on foodsbonus! LED lighting on the inside automatically turns on when the door opens, making it a good option for dark places like basements. That said, this is not a garage-friendly option. For that, we recommend the Hamilton Beach upright freezer.

Test Kitchen Results

Whirlpool Upright Freezer

Our Test Kitchen already turns to Whirlpool when they want an appliance backed by a good reputation. The Whirlpool stand-up freezer easily impressed Test Kitchen leader Sarah Farmer, earning it a spot as the best lockable freezer. Because it boasts a secure locking mechanism, it’s a good option for storing items away from children or ensuring that the door doesn’t pop open. This makes it an excellent choice not only for short-term freezing but also for long-term chilling of bulk meats and make-ahead meals.

It doesn’t make loud humming sounds or prove difficult to open, even despite the securely suctioned seal. Those who are especially worried about the freezer warming up too much can even activate a handy built-in temperature alarm, which sounds when there’s a large fluctuation. Adjustable leveling legs also add a little security for uneven floors, ensuring that none of your freezer organizers tip sideways and cause a mess.

While it’s not meant for garages since it must stay above 40 degrees to properly function, it’s still a handy option for basements and other heated areas. We especially love this easily organized freezer since it boasts a unique bottom storage area. It’s a lowered cavity with a plastic guard rail rather than a drawerperfect for storing pizzas or stacking freezer meals. Five non-adjustable 4-1/2 in. wide door shelves and three adjustable main shelves offer tons of space for chilling cookie dough, stashing ice pops and securing ice cream.

Long-Term Testing

Open door of Whirlpool Upright Freezer

After our initial in-office testing, we sent this freezer home with a staffer to see how it holds up over time with typical use. After a few months, long-term tester Ranah Poppe is impressed with this freezer’s performance. She uses it in the unfinished portion of her basement and notes that it performs better than expected, especially when it comes to the freezer’s footprint and seal.

“The freezer is used primarily to store the meat from a local cow we purchase and split with friends,” she says. “We also use it to stock up on frozen staples as they go on sale. We really like it! It was easy to transport and fit through our garage door without taking the door off the jamb. So far, it has not had any issues and keeps food consistently frozen without frost.”

One quirk she noticed was when setting up the freezer. When she plugged it in, the light was working, but it was not cooling. That’s because it boots in “demo mode.” After referring to the Quick Start guide, she located the Cooling On instructions. She held the temperature button for over three seconds, as instructed in the manual. After some troubleshooting, she found that she had to hold the temperature button for exactly 3 seconds (and no longer!) in order to start chilling food.

“The door is heavy, but that is good because it is hard to accidentally leave open,” she says. “The gasket for the door has a strong seal, so it feels very secure when you shut it.” Overall, she likes it much better than a chest freezer since it doesn’t require any hunching over the freezer to dig through freezing cold packages. She also notes that there’s ample spaceenough for a quarter of a cow! It holds a lot of ground beef, roasts and steaks (with plenty of room to spare).

Additionally, Ranah notes that this freezer accommodates a wide variety of package sizes through adjustable shelves in the main freezer. The door shelves are great for smaller items. That said, despite having six brackets, only three racks are included. Additional racks and baskets are available for purchase, but she mentions that they are a bit pricey.

One area where she’d love to see some improvement is cold retention when the door is open. Cold escapes very quickly, so she tries to make her selections fast. The door alarm goes off after five minutes of staying open, which feels like a very long time, given how quickly the cold escapes. She also doesn’t love that, while the door shelves vary in vertical space, they are not adjustable. There are also no drawers. The bottom space is more of a rail that creates a bin-type space, which may or may not appeal to some.

Pros:

  • Offers a locking mechanism
  • Leveling legs included
  • 5 adjustable shelves and 3 non-adjustable
  • Temperature drop alarm
  • Good seal on the door
  • Interior LED lighting

Cons:

  • Vague temperature controls
  • Not garage-ready

Coolers have come a long way.Whereas the clunky plastic options of yore kept their chill for just a few hours, sleek modern coolers (like Yeti coolers) retain their icy contents for days at a time. This is especially important for camping trips or long hours on the beach. Warm sand feels great between the toes, but it doesn’t bode well for keeping non-alcoholic beers and probiotic sodas ice cold. That said, contemporary coolers have one main failing: chilling food without creating a soggy mess. Luckily, the Ninja FrostVault Cooler solves this problem by offering additional features for those who want to take along a few snacks, too.

Im in love with theNinja cooler, which has a slide-out drawer. You can store food in the drawer and ice and beverages in the main cooler,” says Catherine Ward, Prep Kitchen Manager. Like the rest of Ninja’s kitchen lineup, the FrostVault cooler comes from a reliable brand backed by years of solid reviews. However, Ninja’s pristine reputation isn’t the only thing this “cool” cooler carries along with its chilly compartments. Here’s why our expert Product Testing Team awarded this option a coveted spot in their lineup of the best coolers.

What is the Ninja FrostVault Cooler

The Ninja FrostVault 50-quart Hard Cooler is a rotomolded hard side cooler that looks and feels similar to coolers from other popular brands like Lifetime. Featuring a fridge-temp dry storage drawer, the FrostVault offers a cool, separate place for food and snacks. Because they never come into contact with ice, there’s no danger of soggy sandwiches or damp desserts! It’s available in four colors, including green, grey, blue and white. Each color comes in a choice of two sizes: 30- and 50-quarts.

“You want the beach to be warm, but not your food and drinks,” says Product Tester Annamarie Higley. “This Ninja cooler has you covered with its smart DryZone drawer and above-average ice retention.”

The two-tone look adds a nice flair, and the orange on the drawer lever gives the exterior a fun pop of color. Additionally, the folding latch is easy to use for most folksnothing like the complicated T-straps that became standardized with Yetis. It’s even lockable to keep bears (and little ones) out. Three layers of insulation ensure that ice stays intact for days at a time, meaning it’s the perfect pick for multi-day excursions and ultra-hot beach vacays.

We Tried It

How We Testedthe Ninja FrostVault Cooler

Ninja Frostvault Cooler

For our piece on the best coolers, our Product Testing Team tried 12 popular options from familiar retailers, including BruTank and Orca. To thoroughly evaluate the performance of each cooler, the team looked at features, performance, and value. Over the course of a week, the Product Testing Team:

  • Tested 12 coolers and performed roughly 10 tests on each
  • Collected more than 420 data points
  • Spent an estimated 40 hours on this test, including researching, sourcing, intaking and testing the products

Our Testing Team taped thermometers to the inside of each cooler and tracked ambient temperature/percentages of remaining ice after 24 hours, 72 hours, and 96 hours. We kept the coolers outdoors in a van during the years hottest weekend. Temperatures maxed out around 95 degrees Fahrenheit, meaning the temperature inside the van was well over 100 degrees Fahrenheita seriously unrelenting stress test. We also consideredweight, leakage, drainage, capacity, insulation, maneuverability and accessories.

Testing Team Evaluation

The DryZone drawer is the big draw of this cooler, and it compliments the overall performance incredibly well. It’s such a smart feature, and we’re admittedly smitten. It’s essentially like having a fridge on your person! Even just from the first five pounds of ice placed in the cooler as part of the “sacrificial” ice batch, the testing team could feel how cool and crisp the drawer was.

“I’m a big-time sandwich eater, and I love that this wouldn’t force me to choose between having hard bread from leaving it packed in ice or melty cheese from leaving it in my tote,” says Annamarie.

Draining

The plug is a standard twist-out held in place with a little rubber leash. The water feeds directly to the drainage hole, and a small divot running along the base’s parameter catches any water and motions it toward the drain. In terms of leakage, the cooler does an okay job of eliminating any errant drips. Unlike many of the options we tested, nothing leaks out the sides. All the water that leaked went through the back hingessomething we found pretty standard for most coolers.

Maneuverability

When partially filled, carrying the cooler is a one-person job. That said, while durable and rather ergonomic, the plastic handles jut out from the side of the cooler. Our testers found that these extra couple of inches on either side of the cooler made it too wide for most doorways. Taking it inside requires tilting it to one side or turning it sidewayssomething we found a bit tedious.

Ice Retention

One area where the cooler really shines is in its ice retention. By day three, the cooler still had around 20% of its ice remaining. Keep in mind that this will vary depending on the exterior temperature. For our tests, we sat the coolers in a hot car that hit up to 100F at its hottesta rather intense stress test. On cooler days, expect the ice to last a little longer.

It’s also worth noting that, while easy to use, the latch on this cooler is prone to popping open, which could cause problems down the line. We recommend snagging a lock to thread through the latch to keep it safe from wildlife overnight.

Overall, our Product Testing Team finds this cooler to be a very good value. It falls into the lower tier in terms of price, but its ice retention was on par with the pricier options. The novelty and convenience of the DryZone drawer puts this cooler squarely into the “steal” category.

Can Count

Ninja Frostvault Cooler

While the Ninja website claims that the cooler can hold up to 80 drinks, we weren’t able to fit more than 76 cans sans ice. We even had to stash a few inside the DryZone drawer to reach that numbersomething we suspect most folks won’t do. Despite this, 76 standard-sized cans offer plenty of refreshments for most moderately sized parties. Just plan on leaving a little room for ice!

Pros:

  • DryZone drawer
  • Lockable folding latch
  • Good ice retention
  • Excellent value

Cons:

  • Doesn’t hold as many cans as advertised
  • Handles make it cumbersome to take through doorways

Rotomolded coolers are the current fad among outdoor enthusiasts, and it’s easy to see why. According to our Test Kitchen, the best coolers are rugged, offer reliable insulation and have plenty of room for snacks, drinks and other outdoor essentials. Even casual campers, like Culinary AssistantMark Neufang, note that nothing is more disappointing than a cooler that looks like it hauls a lot but doesn’t offer much room inside. With that in mind, it’s easy to see why large, hard-sided rotomolded options are often considered the gold standard.

Despite many coolers claiming they’re “cooler” than the competition, one option has prevailed in popularity through the years: The Yeti cooler. In fact, not only is the Yeti Tundra 45 Hard Cooler one of the most popular models on the market, but it’s also widely regarded as the very first cooler of its kind. Backed by years of five-star feedback and boasting the best overall design of all the options tested by our expert Product Testing Team, this cooler has both the brawn and the beauty to impress even the most overt outdoorsmen.

What is the Yeti Cooler

While there are many heavy-duty hard-side coolers on the market these days, the Yeti Tundra 45 Hard Cooler is the benchmark model that merits many imitators. Thanks to Roy and Ryan Seiders, Yeti is the brand that introduced heavy-duty coolers to the mainstream in 2006. The brothers created the first Yeti Tundra cooler to combat the intense Texas heat during their summertime outings.

Since then, the company has perfected its coolers’ construction, adding three inches of PermaFrost insulation, a removable dry-goods basket and a certified bear-resistant shell, among many other upgrades. There’s also a bevy of complimentary Yeti gear now available, including iced coffee cups and wine tumblers, among dozens of other outdoor-friendly designs.

Apart from its solid build and incredible ice retention, the Tundra cooler is also eye-catchingsomething rarely observed when it comes to practical outdoor gear. The cooler comes in five core colors and several seasonal shades, including red, white, navy, charcoal, tan, lilac, orange, teal and blue. Outdoor enthusiasts also have a variety of sizes to choose from. The smallest Yeti cooler comes in at a manageable 35 quarts, while the largest measures a massive 350 quarts. No matter the size of the crew, there’s a Yeti cooler that compliments any camping trip.

The Yeti cooler also pioneered “T-Rex Lid Latches.” These are the classic rubber pull tabs that clip into place, which many rugged coolers (including the Orca cooler) now sport. They’re also some of the best, with Yeti T-latches topping our list of all the T-tab coolers we tested. Overall, Yeti is a reliable cooler brand with dozens of dupesbut nothing beats the classic Tundra when it comes to performance!

We verified that the Yeti Tundra 45 Hard Cooler fits 54 cans without ice, making it big enough for a day at the beach or a two-person camping trip. Being rather small, it also easily slips into a Sedan trunksomething the other coolers we tested could never dream of doing. It makes sense, though, since this option only weighs in at 24.45 pounds.

Additionally, it’s also incredibly easy for able-bodied adults to haul it around using its rope handles with rubber grips. Dylan Fischer, our Product Tester, notes that the grips offer comfort and better ergonomics while maneuvering the cooler from trunk to campsite. He also mentions that these rope handles have just the right amount of slack, unlike some competitors’ rope handles, which feel too long.

Ice Retention

Toha24 Yeti Cooler Review Annamarie Higley Ssedit 02

In terms of its insulation, the YETI impresses yet again. Some of the competitors had actual streams of water coming from the backside of the lid when we tipped the closed cooler. This one leaks sporadic droplets but otherwise offers a pretty decent seal. Nowhere is this more apparent than the cooler’s ice retention.

By day four of our stress test in a hot car boasting temperatures above 100F, there was still around 20% of the original ice remaining. While the ice was fully melted by the fifth day, the temperature still measured at a reasonable 54F. Out of all the coolers we tested, this one was a top performer.

“Abominable snowman? More like an indomitable snowman! (Ba-dum-tss!) The Yeti wowed us in just about every way. There’s a color option for everyone, its handles and latches were easy to use, and the ice retention was incomparably impressive,” says Product Tester Annamarie Higley.

Draining

While not inherently flawed, the drainage process leaves room for improvement. There are two methods for draining the cooler. Draining it with the cap still inserted provides two holes for water to flow through. This process takes longer than fully removing the cap to drain. On the other hand, leaving the cap in makes the water stop short of fully draining.

Additionally, according to the testing team, the cap readily pops out, making it easy to lose. Many of the other coolers we tested had drain caps connected via wires or plastic straps. Regardless, that doesn’t impact how the cooler drains.

Extra Features

Toha24 Yeti Cooler Review Annamarie Higley Ssedit 01

One area where Yeti shines is its additional features. When coupled with the brand’s bear-proof locks, Yeti coolers meet the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC) standards for bear-resistant containers. Numerous other Yeticooler accessories (sold separately) further enhance the outdoor experience. Accessories range from practical options like ice packs, rod holsters, and lid seats to party people picks like a set of steer horns to practice roping techniques.

The Yeti cooler also comes with a convenient dry-goods basket. While helpful for keeping picnic and camping food from becoming soggy, it juts into the ice basin quite a bit, limiting the amount of room for drinks. That said, it’s totally optional, and removing it is perfectly fine for those who require more space.

Those looking for a customizable option won’t be disappointed with a Yeti cooler. Their custom shop offers tons of sports teams and other popular emblems. Each cooler, including the custom options, comes protected by a five-year warranty against manufacturing defects. Considering the cost, Yeti’s warranty provides additional peace of mind for those willing to splurge on this luxe option.

Pros:

  • Incredible ice retention
  • 11 sizes available
  • Fairly leak-resistant
  • Good color options
  • Bearproof outer shell

Cons:

  • The drain cap is not attached, so it’s easy to lose
  • Pricier than other options

Keeping your drink of choice cool during the summer is a priority during parties (ice-cold probiotic sodas, anyone?). However, in my opinion, the best stress test for a cooler is a multi-day camping excursion. For folks like me who enjoy trekking into the backwoods with little more than a cooler, a tent and a select few essentials, it’s imperative that any perishables stay chilly for days on end. I can say from personal experience that there’s nothing more disappointing than opening up your pricey cooler on day three of a trip only to find a few pieces of ice floating in a pool of lukewarm water. Enter: the Orca cooler.

Orca’s 58-Quart cooler isn’t just a looker with its bright hues and cute orca tail-shaped T-straps. This colorful cooler is also completely leakproof and well-insulated enough to prevent air leakage, making it an excellent pick for camping. Our expert Product Testers chose this attractive option alongside five others as one of the best coolers on the market after extensive testing. Here’s why we love this classy and chilly competitor and its convenient accessories.

What is the Orca Cooler

TheOrca 58-quart cooler has a nice, clean look that distinguishes it from other high-end coolers despite the similarities in size and shape. The ORCA logo is way smaller than most of the competitors and is only printed once on the outside, keeping branding secondary to its charming looks. It also comes in 10 eye-catching hues: black, orange, charcoal, gray, green, lime, red, seafoam, tan and white. All colors are available in seven different sizes, including 20-, 26-, 40-, 58-, 65-, 80- and 140-quart options.

The Orca cooler is proudly made in the USA and boasts a fun little American flag emblem on the front. According to our tests, the behemoth rotomolded interior holds around 46 standard beer cans (or non-alcoholic beer cans) with ice and around 87 without. The exterior boasts a useful cargo net catch-all for snacks, sunscreen and other outdoor essentials. Something particularly nice is that the cargo net is detachable, making it customizable for all sorts of outdoor excursions. Additionally, rubber feet on the underside offer a little lift from the ground. It’s an excellent choice for those who don’t want to trade style for substance!

We Tried It

Orca 58-Quart Cooler

The Orca cooler offers incredible ice retention and an external pocket for outdoor essentials, making it a perfect companion for a day at the beach.

How We Testedthe Orca Cooler

Our Product Testing Team tried 12 popular options from familiar retailers, including Lifetime, Yeti and BruTank, for our piece on the best coolers. The team looked at features, performance, and value to thoroughly evaluate each.

Overall, the Orca’s performance impressed enough to earn it a place as the best option for ice in our tests for the best coolers. Between the solid seal, heavy-duty rotomolded plastic shell and attachable cargo net, this top performer offers plenty of pluses for any party person.

Vacuum Seal and Ice Retention

Toha24 Orca Cooler Annamarie Higley Ssedit 02

“The vacuum seal on this was seriously impressive. It not only prevented any and all water leakage, but it also likely contributed to the Orca’s winning performance in the ice retention test,” says Product Tester Annamarie Higley. Despite spending four days exposed to temperatures above 100F, the Orca cooler still retained around 5% of its ice. It measured at 50F at the conclusion of our testsfar more impressive than any of the others we tested. Now that’s a “cool” cooler!

Leakproof Capabilities

Like the other coolers we tested, our team rolled the Orca cooler around to check its leakproof capabilities. While the cooler is upside-down, no observable water pools in the hinges. This is in contrast to most of the others, with even the top performers leaking a few droplets from the back. Despite the Testing Team rolling it around with reckless abandon, the Orca cooler remained completely dry throughout the process.

Maneuverability

Toha24 Orca Cooler Annamarie Higley Ssedit 01

Despite its heavy-duty seal and incredible insulation, the cooler is also lightweight enough for one person to carry when half full. That said, a full cooler likely needs a helping hand to haul around. Additionally, one tester noted that this one requires more core and back strength to lift partly because of its heft and the straps being a touch too long. However, this doesn’t impact the overall performance.

Storage

Toha24 Orca Cooler Annamarie Higley Ssedit 03

A cargo net pouch sits outside the cooler rather than inside, like the RTIC cooler. We envision it best used for small belongings rather than for food (though it certainly could hold food that doesn’t need to be chilled). Consider this option if you need storage for summer essentials.

“This is the only cooler with external storageand we love it! It’s perfect for keys, phones, sunscreen, towels and more. Such a simple feature that makes a substantial difference,” says Annamarie. It has a bit of stretch to it, so it can hold more than you’d expect. The front of the pocket is mesh, whereas the backing of the pocket, which butts up to the cooler, is rubber. It’s basic, but sometimes basic is bestwe really appreciate this feature.

Draining

The drain cap can either be unthreaded partially to drain through the drilled holes or removed all the way to initiate a quicker flow of water. The very end of the cap screw comes fitted with a rubber ring to potentially stop it from fully popping out as easily. Still, we noticed the rubber ring likes to fall into a position where it isn’t actually helping prevent the cap from popping out. However, this configuration drains the fastest of all of the coolers we tested.

Pros:

  • Totally leakproof
  • 10 colors available
  • Cute orca tail-shaped latches
  • Cargo net attachment
  • Heavy-duty, solid build

Cons:

  • Requires two people to carry when full
  • T-straps a bit difficult to use at first

FAQ

How to open an Orca cooler?

Like the Yeti cooler, the Orca cooler uses “T” straps. The tips of the T-straps are shaped like an orcas tail (aw!)however, they’re also rather tough to use. The first few times, you’ll need to pull down with pretty much all of your might to get the knob to unlatch from the brackets. That said, they loosen up over time and become easier to secure after a few uses. While tough, the tight straps indicate that this cooler keeps the chill inside instead of letting it leak out any errant cracks and crevices.

This cooler vacuum seals shut occasionally, especially when empty. To fix this, partially unscrew the drain cap to let some air out, and then the lid will lift with ease. We found that this did not happen when the cooler was full of ice.

Where to Buy the Orca Cooler

The Orca cooler is available for purchase on the Orca website and retails for around $400. Outdoor enthusiasts can also find it at many big box stores, including Amazon, Walmart and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Those going on multi-day excursions and plan on keeping food chilly for days at a time will appreciate the ice longevity this cooler provides. Plus, it’s cute to boot!

Comparts

Pros:

  • 20 different flavors per box
  • Priced fairly for the quality and amount
  • Each chocolate has a unique look
  • Sleek, gift-ready packaging
  • Smooth, melt-in-your-mouth texture
  • No Melt Guarantee

Cons:

  • Flavor guide only available on website

Established in Los Angeles in 1950, Comparts is the quintessential modern artisan chocolate company. Each chocolate boasts a beautifully painted piece of art on the top, which indicates each truffle’s distinctive flavor. While they don’t come with a guide, the flavor key is easily available to read online. Notoriously picky about her chocolates, Senior Editor Daria Smith tried the 20-piece signature truffles collection and absolutely melted at the first bite.

“Every single chocolate is different,” she notes of this expansive 20-piece collection. “Not all of the chocolates listed on the sheet are included. It makes me want to order another box to try them all.” She notes that all flavors are very unique and innovative. There were several she didn’t think she would enjoy, but she found herself pleasantly surprised by them. We attribute this to the silky smooth ganache nestled inside each bite, which on its own makes these treats well worth the price.

Comparts chocolates come in an unassuming black box with the brand’s logo printed across the top in white, making for a sleek gift. The brand’s immense selection of styles and flavors spans 67 different options, including limited-edition holiday offerings, making them also one of the most impressive selections we tested. Daria’s box arrived fresh and well-packed with insulation materials and cold packsnot a single truffle melted in transit.

Compartes Chocolates

Each colorful bite yields a smooth texture that melts in the mouth. Unique flavors like bananas foster, tiramisu, key lime pie and vanilla latte arrive with a few more familiar options, like original dark, peanut butter, salted caramel and toasted coconut. You can also order a la carte if you find a flavor you love. Additionally, their chocolate-of-the-month club makes a sweet birthday gift for friends. After all, who doesn’t love a chocolate gift that keeps on giving?

According to Daria, even picky eaters will enjoy at least a number of the truffles included in each box. “I was very impressed with the bananas foster flavor. I didn’t think I would like it, but I was pleasantly surprised,” she says. “After testing multiple boxes of chocolate, this was by far my favorite. Each gourmet chocolate truffle has a unique chocolate ganache filling. Each truffle tastes exotic and delicious.”

“This skillet really earns top marks all around. True, it’s on the expensive side at $180, but if you are looking for a stainless steel skillet that does it all AND efficiently, this is splurge-worthy. It does everything expertly and retains a nice, even heat,” says Mark of this overachiever. Its superior performance might sway you on the All-Clad vs. Hexclad debate!

While it’s made from heavy-duty stainless steel, it’s still surprisingly lightweight and heats up very quickly. This makes it easy to handle while sauting veggies and cooking chicken thighs (which crisp up beautifully thanks to the high heat retention). Even on medium-low, veggies like squash and zucchini develop delicious caramelized edges. Due to the lightweight construction and the skillet’s slanted edges, it’s also easy to toss them around like a professional chefbonus!

Use a soft silicone whisk to loosen any stubborn stuck-on spots for a flawless sauce. Home cooks can easily level up their techniques using this inclusive option. The Ninja Single-Serve Coffee Maker offers both and boasts an onboard milk frother for fancy lattes.

You can’t beat the convenience of a single-serve coffee maker. Just pop in a pod, press a button, and instantly enjoy a cup of coffee before heading out for the day. It’s the easiest (and quickest) solution for working folks who need their morning caffeine fix. However, for those of us who enjoy a particular brand of coffee, even the vast array of K-Cups on the market can’t stand in for our coveted beans. That’s where the Ninja single-serve coffee makera brewer that uses both pods and groundscomes in handy.

“Having the option to use a K-Cup or pre-ground coffee saves money and lets people customize their cup more to their taste,” says Sydney Manning, former barista and Editorial Coordinator on the Product Testing Team. But that’s not all this fancy barista-style brewer comes capable of. That’s why our Product Testing Team voted the Ninja Single-Serve Pods & Grounds our number one pick in our search for the best single-serve coffee maker. Here’s why we can’t get enough of this super convenient morning sidekick.

What isthe Ninja Single-Serve Coffee Maker?

The Ninja Single-Serve Pods & Grounds machine works in two ways. First, it operates similarly to a Keurig by using K-Cups to create a quick and efficient cup of joe in seconds flat. Additionally, it operates on a ‘bring-your-own-grounds’ basis, using a few scoops of your favorite pre-ground coffee to create a single, custom cup.

Our team is a big fan of Ninjas ingenuity in general, and this coffee maker is another on the long list of Ninja products we love, saysAnnamarie Higley, head of the Product Testing Team. It has a frother, cord management and iced functionalityall for a fair price.

How We Testedthe Ninja Single-Serve Coffee Maker

In our quest to find thebest single-serve coffee maker, our Product Testing Team tried 14 machines in their Testing Lab. They performed roughly 10 tests on each brewer and brewed over 50 coffee drinks, collecting more than 450 data points for this analysis. Machines ranged from the feature-richBruvi brewerto the splurge-worthyNespresso Vertuo Plus. During our tests, we considered:

  • Setup and Assembly:Testers read the user manual, noting its clarity and helpfulness. They then set up and filled coffee makers and noted the ease of the process.
  • Specs, Construction and Appearance:For this category, we examine each appliances construction and overall look, measure the length of the cord and determine the height of the cup compartment. Additionally, testers note whether the machine brews pods or grounds, the size of the water tank, the buttons, toggles, screens and specialty capabilities.
  • Performance:Testers brew at least three beverages in each single-cup coffee maker. They utilize as many settings as possible to get a feel for the breadth of the machines functionality. When available, they make a cappuccino, cold brew and regular cups of coffee in various sizes and with both grounds and pods. Testers make a strong and regular cup of coffee in various sizes for lower-level machines.
  • Special Capabilities:For those machines that offer an iced coffee setting, we measure the temperature of the iced coffee directly after output. Testers try each beverage and gauge its quality/strength and the success of its execution if its a specialty drink. Testers then evaluate any accessories, such as a milk frother, on-unit storage or a water cycle.
  • Cleaning:Testers clean each one-cup coffee maker. We rinse the water tank, clean out the grounds if applicable and wipe down any splash marks. Then, we assess the ease of the process, any required solutions and dishwasher compatibility.
  • Value:Testers evaluate each single-serve coffee makers score and then look at the cost. We note whether or not each is worth the price, which indicates its value. Any warranty information also falls into this category. Lastly, we noted who each pick is best for (e.g., home baristas, morning rushers, those who enjoy variety, etc.).

To ensure the most apples-to-apples comparisons possible, all of these coffee drinks were made with Eight OClock Coffeemedium roast grounds, medium roast K-Cupsandmedium roast whole beancoffee. All tea was made withTwinings of LondonEnglish breakfast tea K-Cups.

Testing Lab Results

Ninja Single Serve Pods & Grounds temping iced coffee

The Ninja single-serve coffee maker has an onboard milk frother for fancy drinks like lattes and cappuccinos. Enjoy an array of different brew sizes, from a tiny six-ounce cup to a behemoth 24-ounce brew that dwarfs Starbucks’s Venti size. Additionally, an adjustable spout allows for around eight inches of clearance, making it a good pick for taller travel mugs.

The K-Cup setting in a 10-ounce cup offered a strong, consistent stream with little to no splash-back. The machine beeps when the brew is readya good reminder for those who are sidetracked in the morning rush. While it wasn’t watery, the K-Cup coffee didn’t taste very rich or bold. That’s pretty on par with what we expect from a pod. Overall, it offers a pretty smooth overall taste, which is exactly what we wanted.

We used pre-ground coffee with the reusable pod for the iced setting, again brewing a 10-ounce cup. This round, we noticed the status bar, which indicates how far along the machine is in the brewing process. The pull-time for this was longer, and the coffee looks darker and richer. This likely accounts for the fact that brewing over ice melts the ice and waters the cup down a bit. This also means the machine puts out less than 10 ounces of coffee, again to account for the higher concentration.

Lastly, we used the specialty drink setting, which brews a four-ounce cup. This is their version of espresso for specialty drinks. You can then froth your own milk with the frother for lattes and cappuccinos. We made this a cold drink so that we didn’t have to microwave the milk first. The frother did produce lots of air bubbles, but that could be due to technique. The coffee came out at 134F before we added the icesubstantially cooler than the regular coffee setting. Overall, we loved this feature. It’s like enjoying a cafe-style cup at home!

No need to run to the local coffee shop with this machine in the house! This one does it all: iced coffee, specialty coffee and frothed coffee from grounds or pods, remarksSheri Kaz, our Product Tester. And shes rightit truly is an all-in-one solution for budding home baristas.

Pros:

  • Multi-functional
  • Slim design
  • Frother included
  • Large water tank
  • Affordable price

Cons:

  • Frother isn’t as luxe as a coffee shop wand

Single-serve coffee makers are excellent time savers for fans of a traditional cup of joe. But for caffeine lovers who prefer the biting bitterness of a brewed espresso, the convenience alone just doesn’t cut it. After all, these machines can only prepare classic K-Cup coffeeor can they? Enter: the LOR Barista.

The LOR Barista Coffee & Espresso System is the next best thing to having a barista available on-call. This sleek, souped-up system slides right onto the countertop and delivers true, high-pressure espresso at the touch of a button. Compact enough to fit into nearly any coffee nook, the LOR Barista is also capable of coffee and lattes in addition to espresso. Our expert Product Testers tried it alongside 13 other machines, including the very similar Nespresso Vertuo. Here’s how this pick performed.

What isthe LOR Barista?

The LOR Barista looks similar to a Nespresso or Keurig. The black-and-white colors look cute and high-end. On the front is the brand’s logo, which actually lends itself well to the overall elevated look. It feels very expensive and French. On the top panel are four buttons corresponding to the machine’s power switch and three different brew sizes. Like a real espresso machine, the LOR Barista uses true high pressure to brew espressonot just concentrated coffee.

You probably already know what an espresso is, but for those who don’t, here’s a little rundown. Espresso is a coffee brewed with special espresso beans under high pressure, which creates a concentrated, smaller drink. Typically, good espresso is identifiable by the red-brown, foamy crema on top, which holds tons of flavor and adds a little creaminess to the otherwise biting taste. Mix espresso with a little foamed milk for a latte, add more foamed milk for a cappuccino, or a little hot water for a classic Americano.

The LOR Barista absolutely excels with its classic espresso drinks. Akin to machines like the K-Mini Plus, it uses disposable pods to brew its drinks. However, unlike many other single-serve coffee machines, LOR machines use their own proprietary pods rather than conventional K-Cups. The machine scans each pod and adjusts the brew temperature

The team performed roughly 10 tests on each brewer and brewed over 50 coffee drinks, collecting more than 450 data points for this analysis. Machines ranged from the feature-richBruvi brewerto the splurge-worthyKeurig K-Elite.

Additionally, testers note whether the machine brews pods or grounds, the water tank size, buttons, toggles, screens and specialty capabilities.
  • Value:Testers evaluate each single-serve coffee makers score and then determine the cost vs. value. Any warranty information also falls into this category. Lastly, we noted who each pick is best for (e.g., home baristas, morning rushers, those who enjoy variety, etc.).

L'or Barista Coffee & Espresso System

Our product testing team first began with a large lungo, a rich Italian coffee drink. Brewing is simplejust fill up the water tank, pop in the pod, and press the button corresponding to your desired size. There aren’t any complicated toggles or settings to navigate. Instead, the machine scans each pod and automatically adjusts the temperature and water amount. Choose your strength by shopping for the right pods.

L'or Barista Coffee & Espresso System

This brew is strongthe package notes it as “Profondo, intensity 8.” The lungo offers a nice, rich crema on top and pulls nicely from both spouts in a strong, consistent stream. By design, a lungo is slightly bitter and watery, and using those metrics, the brew is perfect.

Next is an espresso, which the team brewed in a medium-sized setting. This one markets itself as “Papua New Guinea, intensity 7.” Again, the LOR uses a nice, strong, consistent stream to pull the concentrate from the pods. There’s no splash-back, and the drink itself has a great crema on top. It’s the perfect espresso: not too bitter and very smooth.

Finally, the team tested a regular coffee brew in the medium size. This one is the “Coffee Chateau Blend, intensity 7.” Despite LOR marketing itself as an espresso maker rather than a coffee machine, this was our favorite of all the tests. The coffee is very smooth, meaning it makes a good cup for those who like to switch between coffee and espresso. The machine itself is very easy to use, but figuring out the different types of pods and what to buy might be confusing to people. That said, the results are almost indistinguishable from cafe-style drinks. Impressive!

Pros:

  • Creates near professional drinks
  • Detects pod types automatically
  • Produces nice crema
  • High-end look
  • Used pod storage included

Cons:

  • Uses LOR pods and Nespresso Original machine capsules only

FAQ

L'or Barista Coffee & Espresso System

How to descale a LOR Barista?

First, press the on/off button to switch on the machine. Then, pour half a bottle ofliquid descaler into the water tank and fill up the rest of the water tank with fresh tap water. Close the lever and place a bowl with a minimum capacity of 1.5 liters on the lower drip tray under the coffee dispensing spout to collect the descaling solution.

Next, press the “ristretto” and “lungo” button briefly at the same time. The ristretto button will flash quickly. Press the ristretto button again to activate the descaling cycle. The machine dispenses the entire descaling solution at regular intervals, which can take up to 30 minutes. When the lungo button starts to flash quickly again, the first phase of the descaling cycle has finished.

Remove and empty the bowl, then place it back onto the lower drip tray under the coffee dispensing spout. Rinse the water tank and then fill the tank with cold tap water and place it back onto the machine. Press the lungo button once more to start the flushing cycle. When the flushing cycle has finished, the ristretto and lungo buttons flash a few times to indicate the cycle is finished.

Where to Buy the LOR Barista

The LOR Barista is available on the LOR website and at most home goods stores, including Amazon, Walmart and Macy’s. Similarly, snag LOR pods in various strengths and drink types from grocery stores or on Amazon. In our Product Testing Team’s quest to find the best single-serve coffee maker, they tested 14 different machines over the course of 30 hours. Winners with the highest scores range from luxe options that create flawless lattes to sizable picks that hold up to 75 ounces of water per refill. Among these high-end options, one pick stands apart from the restnot because it boasts milk frothers and other beverage bells and whistles. No, the Keurig K-Mini Plus has a different kind of advantage on its side: size.

Keurig coffee makers aren’t as comparable as you’d think. These single-serve coffee makers come in a huge assortment of different options. While pricier picks like the Keurig K-Elite let you choose your brew temperature and cup size, some folks just want a simple cup of coffee in the morning. The Keurig K-Mini Plus is the perfect compromise for those who want a quick coffee fix before work but don’t want to waste space and money on an all-in-one machine.

What isthe Keurig K-Mini Plus?

The Keurig K-Mini Plus is a more upgraded version of the original K-Mini. Rather than focusing on a large water tank and custom settings, it forgoes frills for straightforward performance and a smaller footprint. This little beast easily slips into smaller kitchens and office spaces at just under five inches across and just over 11 inches from front to back. This makes it the perfect pick for apartments, dorm rooms and desks.

That said, the Keurig K-Mini Plus isn’t without tricks up its sleeve. A slide-out compartment that sits just under the brew stream offers onboard K-cup storage. Additionally, a “strong” button injects each cup with a little extra jolt, giving it an edge over similarly sized competitors. It also includes several brew size options for those who choose to use an array of different mugs each day.

To ensure the most apples-to-apples comparisons possible, all of these coffee drinks were made with Eight OClock Coffee medium roast grounds, medium roast K-Cups and medium roast whole bean coffee. All tea was made withTwinings of London English breakfast tea K-Cups.

Testing Lab Results

Keurig K-Mini Plus performed surprisingly well for such a stripped-down machine. Our team notes that it includes an auto shutoff feature that initiates after 90 seconds, making it a safer pick for forgetful folks. While the removable tank only holds a single serving of water, that lends itself well to the machine’s slimmer build. The onboard K-Cup storage also eliminates the need to splurge on Keurig accessories like cup drawers, though the lower price point gives lots of wiggle room in the budget for any desired extras.

During the medium roast coffee test, the result wasn’t watery or weak. In fact, we found it rather smooth-tasting overall. The strong setting tastes pretty similar to classic brew and offers up water of the same temperature at around 164F. We believe that the secret lies in the brew time, which takes just a touch longer than the regular setting.

Additionally, the K-Mini Plus performed very well with tea. We brewed our breakfast tea just after we made a strong cup of coffee, and the result left no trace of coffee flavor behind. Win!

While we did notice more splashback than other Keurigs we tested (which means more cleanup), this is a small price to pay for a nearly $50 price hike to the next expensive model. It’s worth noting that it also runs a little louder and slower than the other Keurigs. Again, we found the low price point balances out its shortcomings.

Pros:

  • Space-saving
  • Available in seven colors
  • Strength control
  • Simple to use
  • Included pod storage

Cons:

  • Uses only K-Cups
  • Small water tank

What is the difference between the K-Mini and K-Mini Plus?

Here's why espresso fans will love this pick.

As a bonafide coffee snob, I’ve always been a bit wary of single-serve coffee makers. Sure, the convenience is there. Simply pop in a pod, press a few buttons and voila, a cup of coffee in seconds flat. No wait, no hassle. The catch? Most machines like Keurigs use pods to produce coffee that’s closer to that of a drip machine rather than a specialty barista-style drink.

Admittedly, I’m a bit picky when it comes to my perfect cuppa. I appreciate a strong cup of coffee resembling an espresso or Americana rather than a basic watery brew. I’m talking rich, deep aromas, crema and complex flavors. I simply never found the right machine for the jobuntil I learned about the Nespresso Vertuo. Learnabout this magical cafe-at-home in this Nespresso Vertuo review. You may find that it completely changes your perspective on the age-old Nespresso vs. Keurig debate!

What isthe Nespresso Vertuo?

The Nespresso Vertuo is a single-cup coffee maker like Keurig or the Ninja Single-Serve Pods & Grounds. The stylish upscale look adds a nice touch to any kitchen counter, and it comes in a variety of complementary shades, including black, red, graphite metal, titan, and silver. Ridged, frosted plastic compartments on the sides contrast well with the heavy-duty cafe look. Unlike most other single-serve coffee makers, Vertuo also uses proprietary pods that offer a range of drink styles rather than just coffee.

Vertuo pods are available in a variety of espresso and flavored coffee options and use a special extraction system that pressurizes the coffee, creating a deeper flavor and a generous amount of crema. For coffee newbies, crema is the red-brown foam that sits at the top of your espresso drink. Its full of flavor and rich, inviting aromas that give each cup a caf-style feel. There’s also no need to fuss around with buttons or toggles. The machine automatically detects each pod and brews the size and strength accordingly.

Enhanced models, like the Nespresso Vertuo Plus, offer additional bells and whistles, such as an adjustable water tank and automatic opening. There is also a bevy of additional machines, including the Vertuo Next and the space-saving Vertuo Pop+. In this Nespresso Vertuo review, we explore the original machine.

Nespresso Vertuo

No need to fuss with buttons or baristas! The Nespresso Vertuo automatically detects pods and brews up real espresso, coffee and specialty drinks in seconds.

How We Testedthe Nespresso Vertuo

As part of our tests to determine the best single-serve coffee maker, we evaluated 14 machines, performing roughly 10 tests on each brewer. Testers brewed over 50 coffee drinks and collected more than 450 data points for this analysis. We used this research to inform this Nespresso Vertuo review. Considerations include:

  • Setup and Assembly:Testers read the user manual, noting its clarity and helpfulness. They then set up and filled the Nespresso’s water tank and noted the ease of the process.
  • Specs, Construction and Appearance:For this category, we examine the machine’s construction and overall look, measure the length of the cord and determine the height of the cup compartment. Notes on appearance also include buttons, toggles, settings, water tank size and any additional features.
  • Performance:Testers brew at least three beverages, using as many settings as possible to get a feel for the breadth of the machine’s functionality. For the Nespresso test, we make espresso, iced coffee, and regular cups of coffee.
  • Cleaning and Disassembly:Testers disassemble and clean the Nespresso machine. We then rinse the water tank and wipe down any splash marks.
  • Value: The final consideration is value, which determines the price vs. performance of the machine. Testers evaluate the Nespresso’s score and then look at the cost. We note whether or not each is worth the price, which indicates its value. Any warranty information also falls into this category.

Testing Lab Results

Toha24 Nespresso Vertuo Annamarie Higley Ssedit 01

In our Product Testing Team’s evaluation of this Nespresso machine, they note that this is the best splurge-worthy option for those who want to enjoy a cafe-style cup at home.

The Nespresso Vertuo has a generous 29-inch cord that reaches rather far and four height settings for the cup compartment. It fits myriad mug sizes and travel containers under six inches tall, and the adjustable spout offers minimal splatter. The Vertuo’s generous 56-ounce tank comes fixed to the machine and offers ample room, requiring fewer refills. This impressed our Testing Team, who found most water tanks on the single-serve coffee makers they tested too small.

The Nespresso Vertuo whips up everything from regular coffee to specialty drinks like lattes and espressos in just seconds. As a bonus, our Testing Team also found Nespresso machines much quieter than other options. That said, they do make a bit of mechanical noise while brewing.

According to our lab tests, the machine brews espresso Nespresso pods using approximately 40 milliliters of water. The dark results are fairly bitter and leave a strong after-taste, with a nice crema on topperfect for those who appreciate a strong jolt in the morning! Similarly, the double espressoswhich brew around 80 millilitersoffer a good crema, strong flavors and a touch of bitterness. The regular coffee pods offer a generous dollop of crema on the surface of the drink. The results are strong and creamy rather than watery, likening them to a complex caf-style drink rather than simple drip coffee.

Pros:

  • Automatically detects pod
  • Heavy-duty materials
  • Available in black, red, graphite metal, titan and silver
  • Provides a nice crema
  • Fast, one-touch brewing

Cons:

  • Must use Nespresso pods

Nothing takes up more time than slicing and dicing during meal prep. While the best knife sets offer a pleasant and satisfying experience, they still take up tons of room on the counter when you factor in cutting boards and prep bowls. Not only does the best food processor save space, but it also makes more time forwellactually cooking.

While some people prefer to spend less on their appliances, others want to invest in high-quality picks that last through the years. Spending more on a pricier option means less money spent on spare parts and replacements in the long run. One such heirloom appliance is the MagiMix Food Processor, which provides even cuts and precise slices thanks to its quiet yet powerful motor.

What isthe MagiMix Food Processor

Magimix Food Processor

The MagiMix 12-Cup Cuisine System 3200 XL is like having a commercial restaurant’s equipment right in your home kitchen. It boasts a shiny stainless exterior and a caddy of attachments, including three mixing bowls, two metal blades, a plastic dough blade, two grating discs, two slicing discs, a triple pusher and an extra-large feed tube. There’s also a BlenderMix attachment, egg whisk, spatula and a handy recipe book.

Apart from automatically adjusting to the task at hand, this easy-to-use food processor provides enough power to shred spring onions, slice up entire apples and whip up perfectly mixed mayo. It also remains relatively silent as it slices, dices and kneads, thanks to a high-performance motor. A small footprint means it takes up little room on the countertop and stows away easily when you’re done.

How We Testedthe MagiMix Food Processor

Magimix Food Processor

We tested the MagiMix alongside seven other food processors, ranging from budget options like Black and Deckerto pricier luxe picks like theBreville food processor. Our team set up the Product Testing Lab with various challenge foods, including cheese, tomatoes, walnuts and ingredients for salad dressing. With the processors assembled, we conducted our evaluations, focusing on the factors below:

  • Setup and Assembly:Testers read through the instruction manual andset up each food processor, noting how straightforward, intuitive and simple it is to attach and swap out the various parts.
  • Specs, Construction and Appearance:Testers measure the length of the cords, weigh each food processor (including base, bowl and standard blade) andassess how loud, comparatively, the machine is while operating.
  • Performance:Testers chop walnuts in the food processor and observe the uniformity of the pieces. They then use the processors to slice tomatoes, noting how thinly the machine slices them successfully. They also note whether the tomato requires cutting for the feeder tube. Testers then supply the machine with garlic, herbs, lemon juice and oil to see how well the mixture blends and incorporates the oil for a pesto dressing. Testers grate mozzarella with the food processor as a stress test, evaluating its efficacy. They also process pie crust to see how well it forms pastry dough.
  • Cleaning and Disassembly:Testers disassemble and hand-wash the food processor, then note the difficulty of the cleaning process and which parts, if any, are dishwasher safe.
  • Value:After looking at the above test results, testers note whether each option is worth the price.

Testing Team Analysis

Magimix Food Processor

When it comes to looks, the MagiMix easily wins the race. Sleek brushed stainless and an included accessory tote give it a luxe look and feel. Additionally, the appliance comes fitted with a thermal failsafe that automatically switches the motor off when it becomes overloaded or runs for too long. It will also only work if the bowl and lid correctly lock into place and the double pusher levels with the MAX level indicator, making it safe for home cooks.

Assembly

That said, assembly is a bit confusing and less seamless than other options. The Testing Team notes that they felt like they almost had to “force” it together with more pressure than they expected. Frustratingly, the MagiMix offers no clicking or labels that signal correct assembly. Once assembled, however, it works very smoothly and quietly.

Chopping

The MagiMix scores four out of five stars on the nut-chopping test. A few big pieces of walnut made their way to the bowl, but they were still pretty uniform. With a few more pulses, we believe they’d be perfect for cookies or pesto. While it doesn’t perform as well when grating cheese, we consider that par for the course with food processors. They can’t replace your rotary grater, after all!

In the tomato test, this processor performed about as well as the Cuisinart food processor. The Testing Team notes that it’s super fast and super quiet, and the feeding tube is big enough for two tomatoes at oncea stark contrast to processors with smaller feeder tubes, like the KitchenAid processor. However, unlike the KitchenAid, this model only offers two slicing thicknesses rather than an assortment of options.

Mixing

Similarly impressive is its performance with pesto. Pieces of herbs were small and uniform, and it wasn’t loud while processing. It was also very quiet while mixing the pie dough using the plastic dough blade. We suggest opting for the metal blade when mixing up dough and the plastic dough blade for kneading, as the plastic dough blade doesn’t quite incorporate the ingredients fully.

Testing Update

Magimix Food Processor

Senior Set Stylist Melissa Franco has tested the food processor for several months. She notes that the MagiMix impresses her husband, who was a chef for 13 years.

“We like the sturdiness of the Magimix. Its a little on the heavy side, but you can tell its a quality product, built to last,” she says. “We havent even begun to delve into all the accessories and blades, but its amazing that it comes with all the attachments. We even used the spatula that came with it when making our Pico recipe.”

Unlike her last food processor, Melissa appreciates how quietly the Magimix operates. Additionally, her husband likes the quiet motor and variety of attachments. “He loves the three different-sized bowls that come with it. That is a game-changer,” she says. “It allowed us to continue with our recipe without stopping to wash or clean the previous bowl.”

She also notes that the storage holder for the accessories and attachments is very convenient, though she wishes it had a latch or snapped closed securely to hold everything in place. As a busy mom who doesnt want to spend any more time cleaning, she also enjoys the simplicity of cleanupespecially when it comes to wiping away fingerprints.

Overall, the MagiMix impresses with its performance and Melissa finds it easy to operate. “We look forward to using the Magimix a lot more in the future,” she says. The Magimix is definitely a sharp-looking food processor! Its sleek and modern yet timeless enough to fit in with anyones kitchen style.”

No matter what kind of coffee maker you use, a comforting hot mug on a cold day or a refreshing iced coffee when the weather turns warmer is such a treat. But if you’re the only coffee drinker in the house (or you just get tired of grinding your own beans), a drip machine may not be the best choice.

When it comes to convenience, single-serve machines like Keurig and Nespresso reign supreme. It’s so easy to pop in a pod, fill the tank and push a buttona process that only takes a few minutes at maximum. But they’re often not the ideal option for those seeking a coffee maker that brews lots of cups quickly for parties and get-togethers. At least, that’s what we thought until we tried the Keurig K-Elite, which offers the best of both worlds.

The Keurig K-Elite couples a behemoth brew tank with fast, quiet operation, making it an excellent option for those who enjoy hosting. Here’s why our Product Testing Team prefers this sizable yet simple single-serve coffee maker over many of the others we tried.

What isthe Keurig K-Elite?

The Keurig K-Elite was introduced to Keurig’s extensive lineup of machines back in March of 2018. As one of the best Keurig coffee makers, the K-Elite is capable of hot coffee and, like the Mr. Coffee 4-in-1, iced coffee. It also dispenses hot water for ramen or bagged tea, making it incredibly convenient at home, in a dorm room or at the office.

A large and removable 72-ounce water tank dispenses up to seven medium cups before requiring a refill. While it only uses K-Cups rather than being compatible with grounds, most of the best coffee brands come in cups and grounds. That means there’s no need to go without your favorite flavored coffee brands.

It looks handsome on a counter with its sleek, matte design that comes in three shades: gold, silver and slate. The top control panel offers a power button, settings button, up and down buttons for the menu, a “strong” button, a hot water button, four different brew sizes and an “iced” button.

Overall, the machine’s settings are easy to navigate and provide various custom options, including temperature selections. There’s even a digital clock display!

How We Testedthe Keurig K-Elite

In our quest to find the best single-serve coffee maker, our Product Testing Team tried 14 machines in their Testing Lab. They performed roughly 10 tests on each brewer and brewed over 50 coffee drinks, collecting more than 450 data points for this analysis. Machines ranged from the feature-rich Bruvi brewer to the splurge-worthy Nespresso Vertuo Plus. During our tests, we considered:

  • Setup and Assembly: Testers read the user manual, noting its clarity and helpfulness. They then set up and filled coffee makers and noted the ease of the process.
  • Specs, Construction and Appearance: For this category, we examine each appliances construction and overall look, measure the length of the cord and determine the height of the cup compartment. Additionally, testers note whether the machine brews pods or grounds, the size of the water tank, the buttons, toggles, screens and specialty capabilities.
  • Performance: Testers brew at least three beverages in each single-cup coffee maker. They utilize as many settings as possible to get a feel for the breadth of the machines functionality. When available, they make a cappuccino, cold brew and regular cups of coffee in various sizes and with both grounds and pods. Testers make a strong and regular cup of coffee in various sizes for lower-level machines.
  • Special Capabilities: For those machines that offer an iced coffee setting, we measure the temperature of the iced coffee directly after output. Testers try each beverage and gauge its quality/strength and the success of its execution if its a specialty drink. Testers then evaluate any accessories, such as a milk frother, on-unit storage or a water cycle.
  • Cleaning: Testers clean each one-cup coffee maker. We rinse the water tank, clean out the grounds if applicable and wipe down any splash marks. Then, we assess the ease of the process, any required solutions and dishwasher compatibility.
  • Value: Testers evaluate each single-serve coffee makers score and then look at the cost. We note whether or not each is worth the price, which indicates its value. Any warranty information also falls into this category. Lastly, we noted who each pick is best for (e.g., home baristas, morning rushers, those who enjoy variety, etc.).

To ensure the most apples-to-apples comparisons possible, all of these coffee drinks were made with Eight OClock Coffee medium roast grounds, medium roast K-Cups and medium roast whole bean coffee. All tea was made withTwinings of London English breakfast tea K-Cups.

Testing Team Evaluation

Keurig K Elite test

The Product Testing Team put the Keurig K-Elite to work, brewing up hot coffee, iced coffee and a K-Cup of tea. The machine offers custom strength, size and temperature settings. We elected to brew each at the standard strength and temperature in a medium mug.

After checking with a thermometer, we recorded the default temperature for each brew. In the settings, you can adjust the temperature to between 187 and 192F; however, we were sadly never able to produce coffee at these temperatures.

Hot Coffee

For this test, we chose a medium roast K-Cup. There are no fluid ounce listings alongside the buttons, but we found that the “medium” button produces 10 fluid ounces of coffee. The team recorded the temperature at 168F. The cup was strong, smooth and not watery at all.

It also takes just seconds to brew the coffee since the machine heats up the moment you plug it in. This is definitely a go-to if you have multiple guests over or need an ultra-quick caffeine fix before heading out for work.

Iced Coffee

There’s just one automated size option for iced coffee. The water temperature when it first came out (without ice in the glass) was 166F, a negligible difference from the regular hot brew setting. We brewed this without the ice first, then added the ice to the glass to cool the coffee down. This is in opposition to the directions, but we wanted to get a temperature reading.

The iced coffee comes out rather concentrated and strong, and it mellows out a bit as the ice in the glass melts. Overall, this was one of the better-tasting iced coffees we tried of all the machines.

Tea

We used the medium cup setting while brewing the tea. Unlike the other machines we tried, the resulting tea thankfully has no coffee aftertaste, which we liked. However, it does seem a little watered-down. If this was made from a steeped tea bag, tester Annamarie says she would’ve wanted to keep the tea bag in the water longer. With this machine, you may want to stick with the hot water function and use your favorite bags from a tea subscription rather than K-Cups.

Overall, the Testing Team is impressed with the performance of the Keurig K-Elite. It produces an above-average cup of coffee that’s stronger and smoother than some of the other machines we tested. Snag this one if you have the counter space for it, especially if you consider yourself a hostess with the mostess. It’s worth investing in this one for the tank size and quiet operation alone.

Pros:

  • Large water reservoir
  • Option for hot or iced
  • Strength control
  • Fast brewing
  • Quiet

Cons:

  • Only uses K-Cups
  • Rather bulky

FAQs

How do you descale a Keurig K-Elite?

You’ll know it’s time to descale your Keurig K-Elite when the “descale” indicator lights up. To descale a Keurig K-Elite, first pick up a descaling solution, like the Keurig Descaling Solution. Then, removeany remaining K-Cup pods and water from the water reservoir.

Next, pour the scaling solution into the emptied water reservoir. If using Keurig’s branded descaling solution, use the entire bottle. Fill the empty bottle with plain water. Use this to fill up the tank the rest of the way and add the descaling pod. Turn the brewer back on. Place a large mug on the drip tray. Then, run a rinsing brew by selecting the hot water button and selecting the largest brew size.

Repeat the rinsing brew process until the “add water” light illuminates and wait 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, discard any leftover solution from the water reservoir and rinse thoroughly. Next, fill the tank with clean water and brew a large cup of hot water. Follow with additional rinsing brews using the largest brew size and fresh water. You may need to refill the water reservoir at least once during this process.

How do you set the clock on a Keurig K-Elite?

Press the settings button once to signal to the machine that you’re setting the clock. Then, use the up and down arrows to select the correct hour and minutes.

How do you clean a Keurig?

Cleaning a Keurig is simple. Pop open the K-cup holder, rinse it and wipe it down. The water reservoir and drip tray need to be removed and cleaned with soap and water. We recommend descaling the machine every few months to keep it in optimal condition.

How do you reset a Keurig?

To reset a Keurig, turn off and unplug the machine, then remove the water tank. Wait 10 minutes, then replace the tank and turn the machine back on.

Where to Buy the Keurig K-Elite

The Keurig K-Elite is available at many online retailers, including the Keurig website, Amazon, Walmart and Wayfair. Whether you’re serving at a social gathering or brewing up a cup for yourself, the Keurig K-Elite offers nearly everything a casual coffee fan could want.

KitchenAid is responsible for many of our favorite countertop appliances, from the famous stand mixer to the new fully automatic espresso machine. Between the fun color options and the high-quality construction, KitchenAid gear comes with a reliable reputation. Not only that, but their assorted appliances have a retro feel that calls to mind mid-century designs met with modern functionality.

When our Product Testing Team put eight of the best food processors to the test, we were eager to see if yet another KitchenAid appliance could live up to the hype. Here’s our honest review of the KitchenAid 13-cup food processor.

What isthe KitchenAid food processor?

The KitchenAid 13-cup food processor is the most user-friendly option we tested. Its 13-cup capacity fits more than enough food for an entire family or party serving. An exact slice disc ensures that you can select the right slice thickness for every situation, from paper-thin potato chips to chunky tomato slices. A variety of blades allows home cooks to chop, cut, shred, slice, knead and mix almost everything you can think of. Attachments fit into a convenient storage caddy, making it easy to stow away after finishing your meal prep.

KitchenAid’s food processor is available in a fleet of stunning shades, including contour silver, matte black, onyx and white. For those who prefer to match it to theirKitchenAid toasterorhandheld cordless mixer, you can even snag it in the classic KitchenAid Empire red.

KitchenAid 13-Cup Food Processor

The KitchenAid 13-Cup Food Processor is a dependable appliance. It offers some of the most even slices, dices and chops of all the processors we put to the test.

How We Tested the KitchenAid Food Processor

We tested the KitchenAid alongside seven other food processors, ranging from budget options like Black and Decker to pricier luxe picks like the Breville food processor. Our team set up the Product Testing Lab with an array of challenging foods, including cheese, tomatoes, walnuts and ingredients for salad dressing. Once assembled, we conducted our evaluations, focusing on the factors below:

Best Food Processor Testing

  • Setup and Assembly:Testers read through the instruction manual andset up each food processor, noting how straightforward, intuitive and simple it is to attach and swap out the various parts.
  • Specs, Construction and Appearance:Testers measure the length of the cords, weigh each food processor (including base, bowl and standard blade) andassess how loud, comparatively, the machine is while operating.
  • Performance:Testers chop walnuts in the food processor and observe the uniformity of the pieces. They then use the processors to slice tomatoes, noting how thinly the machine slices them successfully. They also note if the tomato needs to be cut to fit into the feeder tube.
  • Cleaning and Disassembly:Testers disassemble and hand-wash the food processor, then note the difficulty of the cleaning process and which parts, if any, can optionally be cleaned in a dishwasher.
  • Value:After looking at the above test results, testers note whether each option is worth the price.

Testing Team Analysis

Kitchenaid 13 Cup Food Processor

From the first test onward, our Testing Team was impressed with the KitchenAid’s performance. Even nuts, which gave most of the other food processors trouble, turned out very uniform. For slicing, it offers six adjustable thickness settingssomething we very much appreciate.

One area that caused us some issues was the feeder tube, which was a bit small. Bigger tomatoes may need to be chopped down to size in order to fit. We also don’t recommend using the thinnest setting to slice delicate foods like tomatoes since it can’t quite get the cuts uniform and errs on “crushing” the food rather than “chopping” it. But otherwise, we were impressed with the sharpness of the blades, which rival our favorite knife sets.

The slicing disc has a small and large grate option. During our cheese test, we chose the side with the large grates. The resulting shreds were shorter than the other appliances gave us but pretty uniform overall. This was an impressive feat, especially since cheese is a good stress test. Food processors aren’t meant to replace your heavy-duty rotary grater, after all!

Based on how well it chopped the herbs, nuts and tomatoes, we consider this one’s multipurpose blade to be exceptionally sharp and well-equipped for harder items like potatoes and cucumbers. Also, the working bowl pulls directly off the base when you lift from the handle. It’s held in place during use by a magnet, making it sturdier than some of the others we tested. It also has rubber circles on the underside that stop it from skidding or jumping as it chops.

Testing Update

Since our testing team first tried this appliance, the Test Kitchen has used it to make a few recipes. Culinary Assistant Margaret Knoebel tried it out for black bean burgers and noted that it’s holding up very well despite being a bit tricky to clean, thanks to the three parts that make up the main blade.

“The unit comes with many tools (and a fun way to stack them),” she says. “It looks nice and takes up about the same counter space as similar units.” She does note that she doesn’t love that the top opens on the right side. “As a right-hander, its directly in my way,” she says. That said, the top is easily removable. Those who find this equally annoying may want to try the Cuisinart food processor instead, which rings up at a price point that is very comparable to the KitchenAid.

Pros:

  • Easy to assemble and use
  • Slicing disc and two shredding discs
  • Multi-purpose blade, dough blade, dicing kit and French fry disc included
  • Chops uniformly
  • Rubber circles prevent slips
  • Storage caddy included

Cons:

  • Fairly tall and difficult to store
  • Feeder tube is rather small

FAQs

How do you use a KitchenAid food processor?

Using the KitchenAid food processor is similar to using most food processors. Add the shredder disc or chopping blade to the interior stem and turn the unit on to begin chopping. The bowl pulls straight off and is easy to remove.

The lid on this one is very easy to put on because you just latch it on versus pivoting and snapping it on. The stem is permanently in the working bowl and cannot be removed, making assembly relatively simple.

How do you open a KitchenAid food processor?

The lid clips in on one side and hinges, making it easy to open and close.

How do you turn on a KitchenAid food processor?

To turn on the KitchenAid food processor, plug it in and press down on either the “high” or “low” tab buttons on the motor base.

Is the KitchenAid food processor dishwasher-safe?

All parts except the motor base are dishwasher-safe on the top rack. If washing the food processor parts by hand, avoid using abrasive cleansers or scouring pads. They may scratch or cloud the work bowl and cover.

Ninja Ceramic Cookware Review: We Tried the Ninja Extended Life Premium Ceramic Fry Pan https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/ninja-ceramic-cookware-review/ Wed, 03 Jul 2024 17:23:22 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2009281 Ninja ceramic cookware is a clean, stick-free alternative to traditional nonstick. Here's how it performed during our team's tests.

The post Ninja Ceramic Cookware Review: We Tried the Ninja Extended Life Premium Ceramic Fry Pan appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>
Ceramic pans from brands like Caraway and Our Place currently dominate cooking TikTok and YouTube shorts. With videos floating around of eggs flinging freely from pans without a hint of oil or butter, it’s no wonder folks are curious about this magical cookware. It purports to be stick-free, easy to clean and nontoxicwhat’s not to love?

However, with prices averaging at $100 and upwards for a single saucier, ceramic cookware certainly has a reputation as a luxury item for serious home cooks. Enter: Ninja ceramic cookware, the budget-friendly alternative to these pricey pans. Selling at nearly half the cost of competitors and boasting bold features like a scratch-free surface and oven-safe materials, our Product Testing Team just had to put them to the test. Here’s why we can’t get enough of these sizzling, stick-free pans.

What is Ninja Ceramic Cookware?

Ninja is a trusted brand that produces some of our favorite kitchen gadgets, including blenders, air fryers, air fryer accessories and the social media-famous(and perpetually out of stock) Ninja Creami. As Ninja fans, our team is all about the high-quality materials and multifunctionality of the brand’s appliances and kitchen tools.

Ninja’s Extended Life ceramic cookware is no exception to its sky-high quality standards. The pans are made from handsome aluminum, sporting a gold ceramic coating and stainless steel handles. Aluminum helps regulate temperature and eliminate hot spots, while the ceramic coating contains zero harmful chemicals like PFAS, PFOA, lead, or cadmium. It’s also pleasantly nonstick, making it a great choice for those who find scrubbing their clad pans tedious.

Ninja ceramic cookware is available as individual 10.25-inch and eight-inch pans or as a nine-piece set. Each component boasts a five-year Ninja Foodi NeverStick limited lifetime warranty, which protects against defects in material, construction, or workmanship.

For our evaluations, we tested the 10-inch pan in our testing lab.

We Tried It

Ninja Extended Life Premium Ceramic Cookware

Ninja ceramic cookware is the perfect marriage of easy-to-clean nonstick and a tough, scratch-free surface, all at an affordable price point.

How We Tested Ninja Ceramic Cookware

Alongside Ninja ceramic cookware, our Product Testing Team tested 16 pans and performed roughly eight tests on each to determine the best ceramic cookware. The team used an induction cooktop and a regular hot plate for these tests. We remained as consistent as possible regarding heat settings and timing throughout the test cases. Only induction-compatible cookware was used on the induction cooktop.

Overall, the team collectedabout 675 data points and spent an estimated 40 hours on this test, including researching, sourcing, intaking andtestingthe products. The tests were conducted on some of the most popular cookware brands, including GreenPan and Xtrema. Testers looked at each pan individually and compared them against each other (such as in our GreenPan vs. Caraway review).

Metrics

We scored each pan based on the following metrics:

  • Packaging and Specs: This category includes the contents of the package, whether it’s part of a larger set and each pan’s capacity.Testers weigh each skillet with and without the lid and measure the total diameter and the pan’s depth.
  • Features:We look for features like pour spouts, available colors, available sizes, attractiveness, burner compatibility, oven-safe temperatures and heatproof handles. Testers also note any additional notable design features, if applicable. Also considered are foods or utensils to avoid and recommended oils per the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Performance and User Experience: Testers cook a crepe in the pan sans oil to identify any hot spots and evaluate the evenness of cooking and heat distribution. They then cook two chicken tenderloins in the pan with oil, evaluating the searing and nonstick capabilities. Lastly, testers fry two eggs in the pan, one with oil and one without, to evaluate their nonstick capabilities.
  • Cleaning: Testers clean the skillet after each use, following the manufacturer’s instructions and evaluating its ease of cleaning and its appearance afterward.
  • Value:The final evaluation of the pan’s overall performance compared to cost determines its overall value.

Product Testing Team Evaluation

The cookware, with a hard-anodized exterior and oven-safe materials (up to 550F), is a useful addition to any home cook’s repertoire. Like most ceramic-coated pans, Ninja ceramic cookware requires little to no fats and oils, making it a healthy alternative to traditional cookware. Unlike other ceramic cookware, however, the scratch-free surface means metal tools are safe to use. That said, wood, silicone, plastic or softer tools will help protect the ceramic coating better.

We began our tests by sizzling up some chicken. After several minutes of cooking, our chicken breasts flaunt beautiful sear marks without any sticking whatsoeverand that’s without the use of any oil! Fried eggs slide out of the pan like a dream, and our crepe sports a nice, consistent blonde color after four minutes of cooking. The 10-inch pan is a standard size and doesn’t feel too heavy or unwieldy as we move it from burner to burner. As a bonus, food slides right off of it while cleaning.

“For those looking to get a bit more serious with their cooking without wanting to commit to higher price points, Ninja provides better quality at a fair price,” says Product Tester Dylan Fischer. Apart from the price, we appreciate that each pan comes with an informative sleeve wrapped around the pan that gives a general overview of its care at a glance. After using the pan a few times, the aluminum bottom looks slightly discolored but by no means burned.

Long Term Testing

Flipping omelet on pan

Senior Set Stylist Melissa Franco has used her pan for about a month, primarily for eggs and omelets. She notes that while the Ninja pan takes a little longer to heat up, it retains heat well. She uses less fat to prevent the food from sticking, too, making it a healthier option for her family.

“My kids eat eggs or omelets every morning for breakfast, so the ninja pan has been a great addition to our cookware,” says Melissa. “Its the perfect size, one that we use every day, and so far, it has been holding up great. Its very non-stick, and of course, we did the ‘slide-out’ egg test. It passed easily!”

She notes that its easy to clean with soap and water, but she also loves that she can throw it in the dishwasher for convenience. In addition, she’s excited for the oven-safe materials that she expects will streamline her cooking.

“While we havent had a chance to use it in the oven yet, Im very excited to,” she says. “We didnt have an oven-proof pan before this, so Ive improvised by making a recipe on the stovetop and transferring it to a baking dish. The ability to use this pan on the stovetop, in the oven, and under the broiler is a huge bonus!”

Pros

  • Heavy-duty construction
  • Oven safe up to 550F
  • Metal tool safe
  • Aluminum base provides even browning
  • Affordable price point

Cons

  • Not as visually appealing as some other brands

FAQ

Is Ninja ceramic cookware safe to use?

Yes, Ninja ceramic cookware is safe to use. The absence of “forever chemicals” like Teflon makes it a cleaner alternative to nonstick options.

What is the disadvantage of ceramic cookware?

While ceramic cookware brands like HexClad and Caraway offer easy cleanup and cut down on oil use, they’re not without their drawbacks.

Ceramic-coated cookware comprises a metal base (usually aluminum) with a layer of non-stick ceramic coating. Its marvelously non-stick, and eggs will fling freely from it, says Culinary Director Sarah Farmer. “But over time, the coating diminishes, eventually exposing the metal baseand food will start to stick.”

To preserve the life of your ceramic cookware, use only non-metal utensils and non-abrasive cleaning agents and brushes while washing. By following proper care practices (and limited high-heat exposure), you can extend the life of your ceramic-coated cookware.

Where to Buy Ninja Ceramic Cookware

Ninja ceramic cookware is available at several online stores, including the Ninja website, Amazon, Walmart and Macy’s. The individual pans retail for around $50, while the cookware set is listed forabout $250. Considering the ease of cleaning and fantastic food release capabilities, we consider this a total steal.

Cuisinart Pro Custom 11-Cup Food Processor

The Cuisinart Pro Custom 11-Cup Food Processor slices, dices and operates better than the competition, earning its place as our favorite food processor.

How We Testedthe Cuisinart Food Processor

As kitchen gadget geeks, our team is obsessed with finding the best appliance for the job. That’s why we tested eight popular food processors to find the right pick for every home cook’s kitchen. The Cuisinart food processor impressed us with its powerful performance, combining everything we love about this useful appliance into one neat package.

We tested the Cuisinart food processor alongside seven other food processors, ranging from budget options like Black + Decker to pricier luxe picks like the Breville Sous Chef. The Product Testing Team set up our Product Testing Lab with everything required to test the food processors, including cheese, tomatoes, walnuts and salad dressing ingredients. Once assembled, we conducted our evaluations, focusing on the factors below:

  • Cleaning and Disassembly:Testers disassemble and hand-wash the food processor, then note the difficulty of the cleaning process and which parts, if any, can optionally be cleaned in a dishwasher.
  • Value:After reviewing the above test results, testers note whether each option is worth the price.

Testing Lab Results

Overall, the testing team was wildly impressed with this appliance’s performance, with the machine coming out on top in our tomato test. Contrary to some of the options we tested, our team notes that it produces thin, uniform slices akin to those made by our favorite knife sets. Because the feeding tube is oversized, it easily fits two Roma tomatoes without cutting them down to size. It also doesn’t leave bits of tomato on top of the slicing disc, and each piece easily reaches the working bowl.

While it performs slightly less impressively in our cheese stress test, it still comes out miles ahead of the competition. We had to exert quite a bit of pressure to feed the cheese through, and the machine got a little jumpy at the very endnot surprising since this is a tough job for any food processor. A few larger pieces of cheese were also left on top of the slicing disc. That said, while it didn’t create 100% uniform shreds, it did a pretty good job overall. It’s also very convenient that the machine comes with two grating disc sizes to choose from.

The Cuisinart food processor even performed well in tests the other picks patently failed. During the nut test, our team noticed that the finely chopped nuts at the bottom of the bowl gradually got bigger toward the top, giving a slightly uneven result. While that sounds like a poor outcome, it still ranked second in terms of performance during this surprisingly difficult test.

As one of the heavier models, it’s very secure on the countertop, even without suction cups on the bottom. Rubber grippy pads on each of the four corners help keep it in place. As one of the best food processors we tested, we predict it will last a long time. It feels well-made and sturdy enough to withstand years of daily use when properly cared for. Even better is the fact that it operates quietly, so there’s no need to brace for loud buzzing!

No food processor is perfecteven the luxury options. This is most apparent when it comes to the motor base. When we intentionally slid the machine to test the rubber grips, they left some black streaky marks on our white tabletop. The motor base also has a hole, which makes it more complicated to clean than the competition. Unfortunately, setting the machine up the first few times is also rather tough. Study the manual and keep tryingassembly does get easier the more you do it!

Given the ease at which it purees herbs for pesto and combines pastry dough, we give it a pass on its few consespecially at such a good value. Overall, it’s the Goldilocks of food processors. It’s not too complicated or basic, falling squarely into “just right.”

Pros:

  • Comes with two slicing discs, a shredding disc and a chop blade
  • Produces thin, uniform slices
  • Compact and comes apart for storage
  • Includes plastic spatula and work bowl with cover
  • Rubber grippy pads prevent slips
  • Easily mixes thick dough

Cons:

  • Unintuitive setup
  • Sleeve and food pusher do not come apart

FAQs

How do you use the Cuisinart food processor?

The Cuisinart food processor works similarly to any other food processor. Once assembled, choose from the available shredding and slicing discs and insert the disc into place. Pop on the lid and turn on the machine using the “on” switch located on the motor base.

Finally, insert your tomatoes, cheese or whatever you’re processing into the chute. Larger items like potatoes may need to be cut into smaller pieces to fit. From there, use the pusher to gently press down on the food item while the disc rotates, effectively creating near-perfect slices.

How do you assemble a Cuisinart food processor?

The Cuisinart food processor is by far our favorite in terms of performance. However, it was also the least intuitive food processor to put together. To make it easier for potential buyers, here are a few tips for assembly:

  • The lid and working bowl pivot counterclockwise and lock into place.
  • The blade must match the stem tracks in order for it to go on correctly.
  • The machine won’t start unless everything is inserted properly.
  • Assemble the parts in orderthe lid won’t click into place until the working bowl has been clicked into place.
  • The sleeve and the food pusher, which fits inside the sleeve, do not come apart.

Is the Cuisinart food processor dishwasher safe?

Cuisinart notes that all parts except the motor base are dishwasher safe. Wash them in the dishwasher on the top rack. Due to intense water heat, washing the work bowl and work bowl cover on the bottom rack may cause damage over time.

To simplify cleaning, rinse the work bowl, cover, pusher assembly and blade or disc immediately after use. If necessary, use a brush. Note that the stem is removable for cleaning.

How do you turn on the Cuisinart food processor?

First, assemble the machine completely, ensuring each component locks into place. Then, press the “on” button.

Where to Buy the Cuisinart Food Processor

Cuisinart Pro Custom 11-Cup Food Processor

The Cuisinart Pro Custom 11-Cup Food Processor slices, dices and operates better than the competition, earning its place as our favorite food processor.

You can snag the Cuisinart food processor at most big-box retailers, including the Cuisinart website, Amazon, Walmart and Wayfair. The Cuisinart 11-cup food processor retails for around $180. While pricey, it’s not the most expensive option we testedand it performed even better than the luxury brand. As such, we find it a great value for those seeking an appliance that lasts through years of use.

I’ll admit itmincing and dicing take up most of my time in the kitchen, and it’s my least favorite part of cooking. Even after investing in one of the best knife sets, I still dread the idea of spending precious minutes making bite-sized tomatoes for salsa or minute walnut pieces for pesto. Some folks prefer showing off their fancy knifework with clean, precise slices of sweet potato or evenly chopped carrots. However, I’d rather save that energy for flawless pan-fried finishes and brush up on my reduction skills.

Plenty of prep tools exist that simplify the pre-cooking rush, including blenders, choppers and pre-cut veggies. But when it comes to whipping up fast, simple weeknight meals, the best food processor is like a reliable friend. While perfect shreds and neat, clean cubes aren’t always possible, nothing compares to the timing and convenience of one of these useful countertop appliances. And when it comes to finding a solid option on a budget, it’s hard to beat the Black + Decker food processor.

What isthe Black + Decker food processor?

The Black + Decker 8-cup food processor costs around $40 and comes with several dishwasher-safe parts. At 15 inches tall and 4.15 pounds, it’s the perfect pick for keeping on the counter or in an upper cabinet. The cord is also a very generous 24 inches, making it easy to blend, puree, chop or slice all around the kitchen. Inside the box is a brochure-like manual, food pusher, work bowl with cover, slicing and shredding disc, center shaft, chopping blade and the 450-watt motor base.

Rounded edges offer a cute look, and small suction cups on the bottom help it avoid scooting during use. The cups are strong enough to offer some resistance when pulling it up, but they’re also not so strong that it’s difficult to move. An eight-cup capacity offers a generous amount of room for pico, pesto or breaking down everything from onions to cucumbers. Most of the parts are dishwasher-safe, making it easy to clean.

How We Testedthe Black + Decker Food Processor

We tested the Black + Decker food processor alongside seven other food processors, ranging from budget options to pricier luxe picks like the Breville Sous Chef. The Product Testing Team set up our Product Testing Lab with everything required to test the food processors, including cheese, tomatoes, walnuts and salad dressing ingredients. Once assembled, we conducted our evaluations, focusing on the factors below:

Despite the lower price point, the Black + Decker food processor performed better than anticipated. While slicing cheese, a few chunks were left on top of the slicing disc and didn’t make their way into the working bowl. Overall, though, there were plenty of satisfactory strips. We estimate about 85% of the cheese inside the bowl consisted of nice, long shreds. The rest were smaller crumbles or larger chunksnot ideal, but certainly not worth discontinuing use.

A smaller feeding tube gives slightly uneven results with tomatoes, but nothing came out crushed or mushed. Just be aware that slices may be cut at a bit of a diagonal, making them a little lopsided. This is pretty standard for the price point compared with similar options, so it isn’t something that bothered us much. Additionally, expect some splatter when blending oil-based dressings and other liquid recipes.

While it runs loud and doesn’t impress with its performance chopping nuts (think barely any chopped pieces, excluding some dust on the bottom of the bowl), it does deliver blended pesto on par with the Breville. Considering that the Breville costs nearly 10 times as much, we consider that a bravo-worthy performance!

Overall, the food processor stood up well to most of our tests, except maybe the easiest onenuts. Considering it costs only $40, our team found it overall to be a good value, especially at such a low price point. Other options at comparable price points delivered disappointing results. While this pick isn’t perfect, we appreciate that it operates on par with what we expect at this price point. And, realistically, none of the options we tested delivered perfect results.

Long-Term Testing Update

Marketing Manager Hollie Alexander has been long-term testing the Black + Decker food processor for about a month. So far, she’s impressed with how it easily handles laborious tasks. Her favorite test? Making homemade peanut butter!

“Ive loved my food processor so far. Ive had one previously, and it didnt seem as heavy-duty,” she says. “I made some homemade peanut butter in it. The old one used to get warm and overheat, but this one seemed to handle it better. It is quite taxing on the machine, so this seemed like a good stress test, and it passed.”

Pros:

  • Very inexpensive
  • Easy to store
  • Very lightweight and compact
  • Suction cups on the bottom
  • Includes an interlock safety system

Cons:

  • Inconsistent slicing, shredding and chopping
  • Very loud

FAQs

How do you use the Black + Decker food processor?

Using the Black + Decker food processor is very simple. Simply pop the shredder disc or chopping blade on the interior stem and turn the unit on to begin chopping. The unit has an interlock system, so the processor will not operate unless the processing work bowl and cover are properly locked in place.

How do you assemble a Black + Decker food processor?

You must set the working bowl in place and pivot it clockwise to lock it in. The same goes for the lid. Our testers found that the stem is removableyou need to install it in the bowl to attach the blade. After that, the blade is easy and simple to snap into place.

How do you clean a Black + Decker food processor?

To clean the Black + Decker food processor, first shut off and unplug the unit, then disassemble any parts. Rinse parts immediately after processing for easy cleanup. Then, wipe the base and feet with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly. Stubborn spots can be removed by rubbing with a damp cloth and a mild, nonabrasive cleaner. Do not immerse the base in liquid.

All removable parts can be washed by hand in hot, soapy water. Hand-washing plastic parts with regular dishwashing products will help maintain the food processors appearance, but parts can also be put in the dishwasher in a pinch. If you opt for this, place removable parts on the top rack onlynot in or near the utensil basket. Clean the internal shaft of the chopping blade with soapy water and use a baby bottle brush to remove any clogged food particles.

Where to Buy the Black + Decker 8-Cup Food Processor

The Black + Decker 8-Cup food processor retails at a very fair price, which is around $40. Snag it from a number of retailers, including Amazon, Walmart and Wayfair. When torn between price and performance, we consider this option the best of both worlds.

For most of us, saving time in the kitchen is crucialespecially when there’s so little of it available during the week. Nothing beats a food processor for quickly dicing carrots or incorporating oil into salad dressings. In fact, we consider a food processor one of the most important types of prep tools, especially if you prefer an all-in-one solution for slicing, dicing, blending and kneading.

When it comes to the best food processors, options are available at various price points and styles. However, you can’t beat a brand with a long history of high-quality appliances. Enter: the Breville Sous Chef 12 Plus.

This food processor isn’t just a built-to-last heirloom-style option. It’s also attractive, safe and outfitted with an arsenal of attachments that tackle almost any kitchen prep task.

What isthe Breville food processor?

The Breville food processor is a heavy-duty small kitchen appliance that brings a chef-like feel to any kitchen. From its brushed stainless steel body to its hefty, well-designed components, it really is like having a sous chef alongside you working on weekday dinners. The appliance comes with ample attachments capable of everything from dicing to blending to mixing and slicing. In addition, the high torque induction motor and high-performance stainless steel cutting blades last much longer than those from budget appliances.

Multiple chute options accommodate everything from carrots to tomatoes. We also appreciate the variable slicers that are capable of everything from thick bites to paper-thin shreds. Easy-to-read start and pulse buttons illuminate green when the machine is locked into place correctly. Even the parts offer thoughtful designs, such as a slicing disc that rotates into a “storage setting” that places the blade flush with the rest of the disc to reduce the risk of injury. From top to bottom, the Breville food processor arrives built for home cooks who want to enhance their prep kitchen capabilities.

Breville Sous Chef 12 Plus

The Breville food processor won us over with its assortment of helpful accessories, earning it a place on our best food processors list.

How We Testedthe Breville Food Processor

Breville Food Processor

We tested the Breville alongside seven other food processors, ranging from budget options to pricier luxe picks. Our team set up the Product Testing Lab with an array of challenging foods, including cheese, tomatoes, walnuts and ingredients for salad dressing. Once assembled, we conducted our evaluations, focusing on the factors below:

  • Setup and Assembly: Testers read through the instruction manual andset up each food processor, noting how straightforward, intuitive and simple it is to attach and swap out the various parts.
  • Specs, Construction and Appearance:Testers measure the length of the cords, weigh each food processor (including base, bowl and standard blade) andassess how loud, comparatively, the machine is while operating.
  • Performance: Testers chop walnuts in the food processor and observe the uniformity of the pieces. They then use the processors to slice tomatoes, noting how thinly the machine slices them successfully. They also note if the tomato needs to be cut to fit into the feeder tube.
  • Cleaning and Disassembly:Testers disassemble and hand-wash the food processor, then note the difficulty of the cleaning process and which parts, if any, can optionally be cleaned in a dishwasher.
  • Value:After looking at the above test results, testers note whether each option is worth the price.

Breville Sous Chef 12 Plus

The Breville food processor offered some of the best overall performance in the above categories, securing it a spot on our list of the best food processors. Because of its assortment of 10 accessories and handy carrying case to hold everything, it’s easy to see why it was named the food processor with the best accessories. Home cooks can use it to effortlessly prep meals or whip up some of our favorite food processor recipes. Attachments include three different pushers, a plastic spatula, a dough blade, a micro-serrated S-Blade, an S-Blade cover, a shredder, a processing blade and a mini processing bowl.

While that may look like a lot to process (get it?), each component is easy to swap out, from the slicing disc, which offers eight different thickness settings, to the various bowl sizes. In fact, out of all the food processors we tested, it even provided the thinnest, most even tomato slicesa rare feat since doing so requires an incredibly sharp blade and well-designed pushers. While we did notice quite a few crumbs when creating cheese shreds and chopped nuts, the tradeoff is that the processor is capable of silky smooth pesto and well-blended dough. It’s a great pick for simple tasks like slicing upproduce or more complex needs like making baby food.

Why choose between ablender or a food processor when the Breville food processor offers the best of both worlds? Thanks to a safety interlock system, it’s also much safer than the average appliance. The mechanism prevents the motor from operating unless the bowl and lid are correctly locked into position with the large feed pusher inserted. In addition, a weighted body and slip-free silicone feed provide enough of a grip to prevent it from slipping and sliding as it slices.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Breville food processor is extremely heavy and tall. That means it’s best stored in a low cabinet, disassembled into two or three separate pieces. In addition, note that this is an appliance with a three-prong plug, so ensure your kitchen outlets are compatible!

Testing Update

Executive Director, Visual Production Stephanie Marchese has been long-term testing the Breville Sous Chef food processor for about a month. In that time, she used it to chop veggies and make pesto. While her pesto turned out lovely and smooth, she noted that the veggies weren’t very evenly chopped.

“After pulsing with the S-blade, some of the pieces, presumably ones that were on the bottom of the bowl, didnt chop as to the same size as the others,” she says. However, she finds the cleanup, setup, and overall experience to be well worth the unit’s price.

Pros:

  • Includes dough blade, micro-serrated S-Blade, shredder and mini-processing blade
  • Multiple pusher sizes included
  • The slicing disc offers 8 adjustable thickness settings
  • Includes plastic spatula and carrying case
  • Easy to assemble
  • Weighted with rubber grips

Cons:

  • Extremely heavy and tall
  • Not very uniform results with shredding and chopping

FAQs

Can the Breville food processor go in the dishwasher?

Cleaning a food processor can certainly be complicated, depending on the model. However, the Breville Sous Chef is your best bet if you’re looking for an easy-to-clean food processor. The processing bowl and lid may occasionally be washed in the dishwasher (top shelf only). However, prolonged exposure to harsh detergents, hot water, and pressure will damage and shorten the life of the plastic and its interlock components.

To ensure its longevity, rinse off any stuck-on food first, then hand wash in warm, soapy water using a mild liquid detergent and non-abrasive sponge. You’ll want to soak the bowl to remove stubborn stains and odors. Pour warm, soapy water and ll to the maximum liquid mark. Set aside to soak for five minutes without immersing the whole bowl. Then, wash with a mild detergent and warm water, rinse well and dry thoroughly.

How to dice with a Breville food processor?

The included Breville food processor attachments simplify slicing and eliminate the need for fancy knifework. Simply use the dicing attachment to create nice, even cubes of celery, cucumber or bread for croutons.

How to use a Breville food processor?

Breville food processors are very easy to set up and intuitive to use, whether you’re processing your meat deliveries or whipping pastry dough. To use it, follow the labels that prompt you on how to set it up. Pop on the metal blade to beginno locking or lining up components required. Set the lid and working bowl on, then pivot it clockwise to lock and secure.

Best Overall Modular Sectional

Lovesac Sactional

Pros:

  • High-quality performance fabric
  • Piece-meal assembly benefits hard-to-access rooms
  • Add-on accessories available
  • Wildly customizable
  • Machine washable covers

Cons:

  • Pricey
  • Time-consuming assembly

When it comes to choosing the best modular sectional for movie nights (or simply snuggling up on), it’s important also to consider the longevity of your purchaseespecially if it’s on the pricey side. Im a big proponent of forever furniture, says Senior Shopping Editor Katie Bandurski. MeaningI want to buy quality products that last a lifetime. And after ordering, building and testing a Lovesac Sactional, Im confident this couch fits the bill.

The Lovesac Sactional is built to last and isn’t just available in your standard size and fabric choices. In fact, it’s entirely customizable, from the arm shape (standard, angled or rolled) to the backrest to the configurations. Choose from a smaller three-seat option for cozier spaces and large, M-shaped picks that seat a minimum of ten. In addition, the fabric choices range from soft boucl to luxe velvet, chenille, weave, cross weave, polyline, leather and even reversible textiles. And those are just the “quick ship” optionsin total, there are over 130 different choices.

“Ive had my Lovesac couch for about six months, and it has become a part of my personality,” says Katie. “Seriously, this is the best piece of furniture Ive ever owned. Its stylish, incredibly comfortable and easy to clean. Were hosting family in a few weeks, and I love that I can convert the modular pieces into an additional guest bed. And if they spill? No sweat. I’ve successfully cleaned coffee, tomato sauce and chocolate off the covers with no remaining stains.”

Lovesac Sactionals

One thing to remember is that, like most modular sectionals on the market, Lovesac sectionals require significant assembly. The process isnt difficult, but it is time-consuming. Katies Lovesac furniture arrived in over 20 boxes and took over six hours to assemble. At least I didnt have to worry if the couch would fit through the doorframe, though! Katie quips. The boxes ensure this couch fits even in hard-to-access spaces like a basement or upstairs media room.

Apart from the multi-box delivery, the only (slight) downside is that it shows a good amount of dirt, hair and debris. “I need to vacuum every few days to keep it in tip-top shape, but honestly, Im glad its so visible. That means I can clean it immediately; a darker fabric would hide the dirt,” says Katie. Investing in a good cordless vacuum cleaner is key to keeping your new Lovesac sofa looking like new as the years go by.

Size(s) available: 3-10 seats | Colors: Over 130 | Customizable areas: Arms, backrest, fill blend | Add-ons: Storage seat, charging hub

Fancy a piece of toast? When it’s time for breakfast, nothing satisfies like this classic on-the-go meal. A perfect piece of bread topped with a portion of your preferred spreadbe it butter, jam or cinnamon sugarjust hits the spot. Not to mention the fact that the right toaster cranks out crazy good waffles and piping hot pastries when the mood strikes. However, finding an appliance that delivers precise crunchiness without over-the-top bells and whistles often means settling for less stylish budget options.

You can certainly snag a cheap toaster that burns bread and breaks down after a year of use. Orhear us outenjoy a perfectly even kiss of golden brown made by the Corvette of toasters. The SMEG toaster may be a bit pricey, but this stylish and durable gadget is truly worth the splurge. Here’s why our Product Testing Team gives this classy toaster three thumbs up.

What is the SMEG Toaster?

The SMEG toaster is a beautiful appliance with rounded corners and a shiny chrome finish. The top is brushed or satin, depending on the chosen color. It comes in 11 different shades, including light blue, pink, cream, chrome, gold, pastel green, champagne, red, black and slate gray. The cute rounded lever and mirror finish give this toaster a distinctive style that echos retro appliances.

In addition to its charming looks, each component is thoughtfully designed. The shade knob is substantial and easy to turn, and beneath the toaster are four very solid silicone feet that prevent it from slipping and sliding. Settings include a defrost and bagel button, plus a browning control knob with six darkness choices and a stop function.

It arrives in a secure brown shipping box. Inside is a branded box with a molded cardboard insert for security. The toaster is wrapped in a cloth-like branded bag for additional protection. Like the KitchenAid toaster, we love the overall vintage vibes of this stylish option.

Our Product Testing Team was impressed by this pricey, retro-inspired pick.

How We Testedthe SMEG Toaster

Over the course of several days, our Product Testing Team dedicated their time and Testing Lab to find thebest toasters for every budget and need. This endeavor introduced us to various options, from the aptly named Beautiful toaster to splurge-worthy finds like the Breville toaster. The SMEG toaster was voted the “most stylish” option, earning its place in the top six. It flawlessly tackled tests in the following categories (and looked good doing it):

  • Size and unit of measurements
  • Packaging and shipping quality
  • The fit of test foods, including thick-cut brioche, sourdough, English muffins, pastries, bagels and frozen waffles
  • Ease of slice removal
  • Any special settings and the performance of those settings
  • How long the settings take
  • Appearance, material and overall quality
  • Ease of care and cleaning
  • Quality compared to price

Before testing for our SMEG toaster review, we wondered how a toaster could possibly be worth $200. However, this appliance pleasantly surprised us with its aesthetics and overall performance against 12 competitors.

The settings offer toasting options for every breakfast eater, from no browning with a very light crisp to an impressively even browning with plenty of crunch. Toaster pastries also fared well on the lowest “defrost” setting, which, based on the icon, seems like a built-in reheat setting. It was perfectly heated through with an ooey, gooey center.

One-Month Update

Smeg Toaster One Month Update

Senior Video Producer Paul Klawien volunteered his kitchen to long-term test the SMEG toaster. So far, he is impressed with the glossy look and even results.

“Our family uses it about three to four times per week, and it does consistent toasting every time,” says Paul. “I really like the solid construction. Every piece on it feels sturdy and solid. The chrome and weight of it remind me of 1950s appliances that are durable and last forever.”

Regarding criticisms, Paul notes that the popping-up sound is rather quiet for his lifestyle. “My wife and I are running around in the morning with a family of young kids, so Ill often put breakfast in to get toasted and then multitask. I rarely notice when it pops, so toast often gets left in and cold. A louder pop would remind me to grab it right away,” he says.

Additionally, he finds the combination of small numbers and a chrome surface make the knob a bit difficult to read. He also notes that he must crank the dial to the sixth toast setting for bagels. That said, Paul mentions that the simplicity of the controls, the one-side toasting feature and a well-designed crumb tray balance out the negatives.

Pros:

  • Gorgeous design backed by strong, quality materials
  • 11 different sizes, shades and finishes available
  • Easy to clean and de-crumb
  • Includes a stop button
  • Has defrost and bagel buttons
  • 1-year warranty

Cons:

  • No lift function on the lever
  • Easily shows fingerprints
  • Wont fit squatter slices
  • Expensive

However, the real appeal of the brand is its high-quality materials that make up some of the most innovative stand mixer attachments available. In our recent hunt for the best toasters, the KitchenAid toaster impressed us with more than just its shining exterior (which, to be fair, is gorgeous). With a library of settings, even results and looks that befit a mid-century modern dream kitchen, it topped our list as the best all-purpose option. Here’s why we keep popping our bread into this gleaming, retro-style appliance.

What is the KitchenAid Toaster?

Are you nostalgic for the glossy, space-age designs of yesteryear? The KitchenAid Toaster is made for folks like you. It’s a retro-style toaster that calls to mind mid-century home appliances with a shiny chrome body and sleek, rounded corners. Available in brushed silver, red and black, the toaster embodies 50s aesthetics without feeling dated. There’s also a four-slice option that functions as two toasters in one for folks with larger families. For our tests, we chose the Empire Red two-slice version.

Like most KitchenAid appliances, it’s undeniable that this toaster looks chic on a counter. The sides are reflective red plastic, and the top band is a beautiful brushed stainless. The controls, logo and lower base are trimmed in black. Chrome vents on the side give it a retro automobile feel. A five-point shade dial, pull-down lever and buttons are all on one end, while the other boasts a generous 38-inch cord that ends in a three-prong plug.

There are thoughtful touches throughout, including a bagel symbol that indicates which way to insert halves for the best outcome. A rather loud bell sounds when each toast session is finished, so you never forget about your breakfast while distracted by the morning rush.

How We Testedthe KitchenAid Toaster

Kitchenaid Toaster How we Tested

Over the course of several days, our Product Testing Team dedicated their time and Testing Lab to find the best toasters for every budget and need. This endeavor introduced us to various options, from a high-quality Breville pick to practically-priced budget options like the Beautiful toaster. The KitchenAid toaster impressed with its sturdy components and sleek look, earning it the best all-purpose award. It flawlessly tackled tests in the following categories:

  • Size and unit of measurements
  • Packaging and shipping quality
  • The fit of test foods, including thick-cut brioche, sourdough, English muffins, pastries, bagels and frozen waffles
  • Any special settings and the performance of those settings
  • Appearance, material and overall quality
  • Ease of care and cleaning
  • Quality compared to price

Testing Team Analysis

Kitchenaid Toaster Testing Team Analysis

The toaster truly is the perfect multipurpose pick, whether you prefer toaster pastries, English muffins or a slice of crispy, crunchy peanut butter toast. Five darkness settings and two “other” buttons (bagel and cancel) offer up a range of options for brunches, breakfasts and midday snacks. A simple control dial with an audible “click” ensures folks enjoy toast in the shade they expect.

While there are five darkness settings, we found the highest setting churned out smoking pieces that looked pretty inedible, and the medium setting was a bit more brown than wed like. That said, most folks will find that the sweet spot is the lowest setting, which churns out an even golden brown that extends the whole length of each bread slice.

Out of all the toasters we tested, the KitchenAid toaster’s bagel setting offered the most even browning. It is comparable, color-wise, to white bread we toasted on medium. It’s worth noting that the toaster does take a while to get there, opting for a “slow and steady” approach rather than a faster toast at higher temperatures. That said, we definitely prefer the accuracy of this toaster to the splotchy results from speedy competitors.

While it doesn’t offer a frozen setting or pastry buttons, both waffles and toaster pastries fared well on the first setting. The lever is a little bouncy, but other than that, it seems like it should last a long time. We’d love to see improvement in the lift function of the lever, which we needed to remove an English muffin. The edge of the muffin was barely above the opening of the slot, making it a bit awkward to retrieve. Other than that, we found few negatives to report.

Pros:

  • Sleek look that comes in six shades and finishes
  • Incredibly stable and lever feels high-quality
  • Shade dial has an audible click, so you know its properly set
  • A bell sounds when each toast session is finished
  • Bagel symbol indicates which way to insert halves
  • 1-year warranty

Cons:

  • Toasts a bit slowly
  • 3-prong plug may not work with all outlets
  • Fingerprint magnet

One Month Update

Kitchenaid Toaster 1 Month update

After testing the toaster against 13 other options in our Testing Lab, Editorial Business Assistant Kari Kober volunteered to continue using it as her primary toaster in her own home. Regarding long-term performance, Kari is impressed with the sleek, retro look and the even kiss of brown on toast, bagels and English muffins.

“The toaster itself is very nice looking with the red. I feel that it looks good enough to leave out on the counter. I go just past the first setting, and it toasts my toast, bagels and English muffins perfectly,” says Kari. “One of my favorite features is the beep it makes just before it pops up because if I have started something else, its a nice reminder rather than getting too sidetracked.”

In terms of overall quality, KitchenAid gets a thumbs up from Kari. “You can tell the quality is there in the toaster, and it’s well made and built to last. I feel it’s worth the price for a better-quality toaster. I dont feel that it’s too expensive, either,” she says.

FAQ

How to clean a KitchenAid toaster?

First, unplug the toaster and let it cool. Second, grasp the center of the crumb tray and slide it out. Finally, simply shake the crumbs into a waste container. We recommend emptying the crumb tray after each use. The Crumb tray is hand-wash only.

Similarly, wipe the toaster with a soft, damp cotton cloth. Do not use paper towels, abrasive cleaners or liquid cleaning products. Do not immerse the toaster in water. Return the crumb tray to the toaster. Press it in firmly until it clicks into position. Never use a toaster without a crumb tray in the proper position!

How do I reset my KitchenAid toaster?

Press the “cancel” button to reset a KitchenAid toaster.

Why is my KitchenAid toaster not toasting evenly?

A full crumb tray is the number one reason your toaster might not be toasting evenly. Emptying the crumb tray after each use ensures you get a nice, all-over golden brown rather than a spotty piece of bread.

Where to Buy the KitchenAid Toaster

Apart from its impressive performance, the KitchenAid toaster comes very reasonably priced at under $60. In addition to its mid-tier price point, we love that it’s readily available at most stores, including Amazon, Walmart and KitchenAid.

Vellabox Candle Subscription BoxKATIE BANDURSKI/TASTE OF HOME

Pros:

  • Three different subscriptions
  • Surprise gift each month
  • Very inexpensive, considering the quality
  • Giftable packaging
  • Includes a variety of candle brands

Cons:

  • One scent per box

A candle subscription that’s affordable, flexible and giftable may seem like a white whale, but we found an option that truly does have it all. Our pick for the best overall candle subscription is Vellabox. Vellabox offers very flexible subscription options, parsed out by candle size. Choices include a four-ounce option, an eight-ounce option and a behemoth 16-ounce option.

Our favorite aspect of Vellabox is that each included candle comes from a different candlemaker each month, meaning that there’s no limit to the number of scents and brands you get to try. Plus, regardless of size, each box comes with a curated gift to accompany the candle.

Vellabox Candle Subscription Box

Senior Shopping Editor Katie Bandurski has been a Vellabox customer ever since trying them for her Vellabox review. In that time, she has received a number of candle companions, from gourmet lip balms to an eco-friendly mini scrub brush. “I’ve received many Vellabox boxes over the years, and they’re all high quality. I’ve found so many amazing scents (hello, pear and brandy), and I love to give them as gifts,” she says.

Subscriptions cost between $12 and $30, depending on your chosen candle size. For the price, we find Vellabox to be an incredible value for gifting, enjoying and exploring new scents. They’re also very well packaged to prevent breakage, and each comes in a pretty fabric pouch that elicits “oohs” and “ahhs” from potential giftees.

The Smart and Sleek Breville Toaster That Stole Our Editor’s Heart https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/breville-toaster-review/ Thu, 13 Jun 2024 15:55:05 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1999561 According to our tests, this Breville 2-slice toaster is worthy of the splurge, with a clever "A Bit More" function and large capacity slots.

You’re in good company if you understand the frustration of playing roulette against your budget toaster. Nothing is more disappointing than trying to toast a slice fresh from the bread machine, only to remove a charred husk from your toaster’s narrow slots. And that’s assuming those thick, rustic slices even fit in the first place.

Because of this, I used to consider toasters a necessary evil. No matter how I approach things, I always over-toast my gluten-free bread slices. Frankly, I’m tired of my breakfasts being last-minute bowls of cereal rather than the protein-packed peanut butter toast I dream of.

I would have laughed if you had told me last year that I’d be pining after a pretty, feature-packed smart toaster. That was before I heard about the Breville toasterand finally understood that owning one of the best toasters completely redefines breakfast.

What is the Breville Toaster?

The Breville toaster isn’t your grandma’s 1950s Toastmaster De Luxe. It’s sleek and futuristic and features simple, easy-to-understand settings and buttons. It doesn’t justlook nice, either. This impressive pick outperformed roughly seven other toasters in rigorous testing, earning it a spot alongside six other winners.

Noteworthy features include a “lift and look” lever for checking in on a piece’s progress and the “a bit more” button that adds just a touch of extra toastiness to slices. The toaster is compact and solid, offering a slip-free bottom that holds itself against aggressive lever-pullers (guilty!). Special settings include “bagel” and “frozen” buttons and a slider bar to indicate toast level. Additionally, the slider features an LED light that acts as a countdown. This handy visual reference makes it easy to see how much time is left at a glance.

Sure, it’s priced a bit higher than a traditional two-slice toaster. But the Breville toaster is well worth the splurge if you’re sick of badly burned toast or cold-in-the-middle pastries. Plus, the brand has a proven track record of putting out top-rated appliances. Our favorites include some of the best drip coffeemakers, indoor pizza ovens, and the famous Bambino Plus espresso machine, which impressed our deputy editor.

How We Tested the Breville Toaster

Breville Toaster

Over the course of several days, our Product Testing Team dedicated their time and Testing Lab to find the best toasters for every budget and need. This endeavor introduced us to various options, from pretty Beautiful-branded picks to practically-priced budget options. The Breville was our favorite “smart” option, earning its place in the top six. It flawlessly tackled tests in the following categories:

  • Size and unit of measurements
  • Packaging and shipping quality
  • The fit of test foods, including thick-cut brioche, sourdough, English muffins, pastries, bagels and frozen waffles
  • Ease of slice removal
  • Any special settings and the performance of those settings
  • How long the settings take
  • Appearance, material and overall quality
  • Ease of care and cleaning
  • Quality compared to price

From the outside in, this toaster impressed with its high quality components and thoughtful touches. Remarkably, the luxe brushed aluminum Breville hides fingerprints very well, making it great for families. In addition, a bagel symbol indicates which way to insert halves, leading to perfectly crispy, indulgent lox bagels. Probably our favorite feature is that the interior levers are automated, so the bread descends and ascends on its own after you press “go.”

Regardless of the setting, the toaster offers quite an even amount of browning on both sides. We found that the first setting is ideal for most folks. It leaves bread pleasantly crunchy, pastries golden brown on the edges, and waffles crispy on one side while soft enough to soak in syrup on the other. If you trust any toaster with the spoils from your favorite bread delivery service, make it this one.

One Month Update

Breville Toaster

Team member Jessi Rhine has been testing the Breville toaster for about four weeks in her own home. Despite heavy use during breakfast, she comments that the toaster still looks brand new. She uses it alongside a Breville toaster oven. The two appliances form a classy duo that tackles everything from warming pastries to impeccably toasted slices ready for a smear of butter and jelly.

Breville Toaster

“We used only to use a toaster oven in the past. This new toaster seems faster and makes the toast brown on both sides, which is great,” she says. “I think this is a great toaster, and I would recommend it.”

Breville Toaster

So far, Jessi has only used the toaster on the first toast setting, which results in perfectly toasted bread. She notes that the ‘a bit more’ setting is a handy option to boost the darkness slightly without worrying about charring her breakfast. That said, she also finds the first setting dark enough, noting that she can’t imagine trying to enjoy a piece toasted on the fifth setting. In our tests, this produces a pretty blackened piece, which some folks may prefer.

Pros

  • Has Lift and Look and A Bit More buttons
  • Three-prong plug with a handy pull ring
  • Very stable
  • LED countdown
  • Fits squatter slices at an angle

Cons

  • No choice of color or finish
  • Pricey

FAQ

How do I clean the Breville toaster?

According to the Testing Team, cleanup is simple. Remove the crumb tray, empty it, and replace it before using the toaster again. To remove additional crumbs, turn the toaster upside down over the trash bin and shake the crumbs free. Wipe the outside of the toaster with a slightly dampened soft cloth, then polish with a soft, dry cloth to dry completely.

Where to Buy the Breville Toaster

The Breville toaster is available for purchase at major retailers, including the Breville site, Amazon and Walmart. While it’s pricier than other options, it’s as close to an heirloom toaster as possible, making it worth the splurge. With proper care and use, we expect this one to last through years of daily use.

Best Overall Kitchen Knife Set

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Four Star Knife Set

Pros:

  • Sleek, understated look
  • Well-balanced German steel construction
  • Includes all the essentials
  • Heirloom quality materials
  • Very sharp out of the box

Cons:

  • Five-inch serrated knife may be too short for some
  • No sheaths or block included

Zwilling is practically synonymous with quality. Given that, we’re unsurprised that it scored the most points in our tests for the best kitchen knife set. The Four Star knife set is a basic but remarkable assortment of three essential knives. The set includes an eight-inch chef’s knife, a three-inch pairing knife and a five-inch serrated knife. We love that there’s no gimmicky extras or flashy frillsjust a simple, high-quality set of kitchen tools. The quality of the chef’s knife, in particular, is not lost on Deputy Editor and self-described knife snob Nicole Doster.

“You know how prepping ingredients usually feels like a chore? Now I look forward to it because I have such a nice knife that slides through celery, peppers, potatoes, broccoli florets, roast chicken and steak like butter,” she says. “With just a little pressure, the Zwilling knife chops harder ingredients too, like super fibrous sweet potato. I even retired my beloved Ergochef chef’s knife that I thought you’d have to rip from my cold dead hands in favor of the new Zwilling.”

She notes the overall ergonomics of this set are perfect for those who don’t like holding heavier utensils. “At first, I was shocked to feel that the knives were so lightweight. I’ve been used to handling Ergochef knives, which I consider high quality,” she says. “The Zwillings weren’t heavy in my hands but had enough weight distributed to feel well-balanced, like the knife wouldn’t sway one direction or the other.”

Zwilling

Each inclusion falls right into the “Goldilocks zone” of size and value, making them perfect for both budding home cooks and experienced chefs. The blades themselves come from high-carbon stainless steel using Henkel’s proprietary “FRIODUR” methods. This method centers on heating and cooling the blades in a specific manner to create a high-quality cutting tool that doesn’t chip or crumble throughout the years. While the serrated knife works well for most baked goods, our one complaint is that the five-inch blade may be too short for larger bread loaves.

Unfortunately, this particular Zwilling set doesn’t come with a dedicated knife block (or sheaths, for that matter). However, given the quality and value of the set, we don’t consider that a deal breaker. Those interested in the set should snag one of our favorite knife holders to keep your workspace tidy and your knives from knocking against each other.

Blade material: Carbon stainless steel |Storage: No | Includes: 8″ Chef’s knife, 3″ pairing knife, 5″ serrated knife

Here's how it beat out 13 other brands.

While you may know her as an actress, Drew Barrymore is also a businesswoman with her own lines of cleaning products and kitchen appliances. The Beautiful by Drew collection at Walmart, in particular, cultivates a cult following of folks who love pretty gear. And there’s more to this ultra-shoppable set than colorful selections and shiny details.

In fact, the Beautiful Toaster won the “best overall” honor during our toaster tests, coming out ahead of industry-leading brands like KitchenAid and Breville. It even earned a spot on our Product Testing Manager’s counter!

So what’s the deal with the Beautiful Toaster? If you expect just another piece of celebrity cookware, you’re mistaken. This sleek, colorful toaster offers optimum performance in a pretty package. Plus, it retails for less than $40. Here’s why we’re obsessed with this practical and lovely appliance.

What is the Beautiful Toaster?

The Beautiful Toaster from the Beautiful by Drew Barrymore kitchen line absolutely oozes style. Apart from offering a sleek matte body and silvery, shining accents, it also takes up just 11 inches of space. A lift function on the lever makes retrieving squatter slices of bread easy, and bagel and gluten-free settings round out its functionality.

Like the rest of the Beautiful line (including the Hero Pan), the toaster comes in seven pretty shades: black sesame, cornflower blue, lavender, oyster grey, rose, sage green and white icing. The toaster uses touchscreen technology rather than raised buttons, making it much easier to clean since there’s nowhere to trap crumbs.

How We Testedthe Beautiful Toaster

Beautiful By Drew Toaster

Over the course of several days, our Product Testing Team dedicated their time and Testing Lab to find the best toasters for every budget and need. This endeavor introduced us to various options in various styles and price points. The Beautiful by Drew Barrymore Toaster immediately won us over, earning it the best overall award. It flawlessly tackled tests in the following categories:

  • Size and unit of measurements
  • Packaging and shipping quality
  • The fit of foods, including thick-cut brioche, sourdough, English muffins, pastries, bagels and frozen waffles
  • Ease of slice removal
  • Performance of special settings
  • Timing of each setting
  • Appearance, material and overall quality
  • Ease of care and cleaning
  • Quality compared to price

The Beautiful by Drew Toaster is impressive with its sleek matte finish, on which we found fingerprints are nearly indetectable. A satin gold handle with a B monogram on the side and a futuristic touchscreen display round out this pretty pick. However, beauty isn’t the only thing going for this stylish option.

In terms of performance, it delivers as-expected darkness for each setting. The lowest option is one of the fastest of all the toasters we tested. It leaves a substantial crisp on both sides of the bread without browning. One setting up, and the bread gets pretty dark. A nice brownness all over the bread slices even reaches the edges. The upper quarter of each bread piece is ever-so-slightly darker than the rest. As for the darkest setting, an all-over even darkness covers the bread. While most folks will settle for the middle setting, it’s nice that the others offer even coverage.

We were most impressed with the waffle setting. During our tests, the toaster browned waffles all over and completely defrosted the waffles interiorsomething the other toasters we tested struggled with. The instructions note not to use it for toaster pastries with runny filling, but we found no issues toasting one up on low.

While it doesn’t offer the same smart features as our beloved Breville toaster, the LED touchscreen adds an additional layer of user-friendly elegance. It also comes in a wide range of shades that match the rest of the line, including the frozen margarita maker. Those seeking a toaster that flawlessly tackles the basics and looks good doing it, the Beautiful Toaster is exactly what you’re looking for.

Four-Month Update

Product Testing Manager Annamarie Higley has regularly used this toaster at home since the end of March. Its operating just as well as it did months ago. Apart from being the overall best toaster winner, this was also Annamarie’s personal favorite toaster from the batch test.

“This toaster isnt perfect, but I quickly learned during batch testing that no toaster is (even the $300 ones!),” says Annamarie. “All things considered, this toaster produces a remarkably even toast. I appreciate that this toaster has a matte finish. Some of my other toasters have been chrome or stainless steel, and the finger prints are inevitable but insanely irksome, nonetheless. Not an issue with this one!”

One place where Annamarie notes the toaster could do better? Bagels. “It seems as though the heat intensity decreases when you hit the bagel button. For example, a level-three toast on a bagel with the bagel setting wont be as dark as a level-three toast on a regular piece of bread on the standard toast setting,” she says. “I havent quite honed how to best make bagels with it. It produces near-perfect English muffins, bread and frozen waffles, though.”

Ive used a few other Beautiful products, like the ceramic-coated skillet and stand mixer, and Im always astounded by the quality for the price. This toaster is no different. Its understated but still so stylish, toasts a mean slice of toast and costs only $40,” notes Annamarie. “I love for items in my home to have a little personality (but I dont want to sacrifice performance, obviously!). This toaster is perfect for me.

According to our extensive testing, GreenPan produces the overall best ceramic cookware. The GreenPan Valencia pan has a silky ceramic coating that keeps everything from crepes to eggs sliding smoothly across the surface. In addition toearning its place as the best ceramic frying pan thanks to its performance, GreenPan’s ceramic offerings work on every cooking surface, including induction.

Because it comes from sturdy, heavy-duty aluminum, we expect it to last through years of use with proper care. That shouldn’t be a problem for most, especially since it’s one of the only options we tested that’s metal utensil safe. In addition, a scratch- and chip-resistant surface makes the slightly higher price tag a little easier to swallow. Like the featured pan in our GreenPan review, this ceramic cookware also comes in various fun shades. Colors include green, pink, blue, mint, yellow, purple, burgundy and coral, among many other options.

“If you’re looking for a quality pan that sears like a dream, the GreenPan Valencia is a solid option with an effective non-stick finish and induction-compatible magnetic base,” says Product Testing Team Member Dylan Fischer. In our tests of the pan, we noted that it offers some of the most even results in our searing test. The chicken turned the perfect shade of bronze, with a slightly browner center. Plus, the pan itself is lightweight and easy to maneuver for fancy egg flips.

Even after our tests, the bottom of the pan remained pristinethere was no charring or scratching! Plus, GreenPan backs its cookware with a two-year warranty for the ceramic coating and a lifetime warranty that covers defects. While the pan has no lid, easy cleanup and perfect nonstick performance make it worth the splurge.

Best Overall Dining Table

Serif Extendable Dining Table

Pros:

  • Appealing mid-century design
  • Easy-to-follow directions
  • Sturdy, heavy materials
  • Extendable to 79 inches
  • Hidden tray for storing leaves when not in use
  • Scratch- and stain-resistant tabletop

Cons:

  • Pricey
  • Not 100% wood

Sturdy materials and a pleasant, simplistic design make the Serif extendable dining table our top pick for the best dining room tables overall. Apart from the clean, neutral lines, we appreciate the simple assembly and low-maintenance materials that make it a shoo-in for families. A choice of oak or walnut offers an extra layer of customization.

The table provides a smooth, flat surface thats stain- and scratch-resistant, so its great for a variety of family activities like cooking and crafting, says EditorMary Henn, who owns a Serif table. Despite the tabletop not boasting 100% wood, it’s still simple to maintain and doesn’t scratch easily. While you should only use wood-safe products for a deep clean, a wet rag should do the trick for cleaning up daily messes, notes Mary.

One of our favorite aspects of this unassuming wood table is that it truly works in almost any space. It looks just as at home with a spread of Pioneer Woman dishes as it does adorned with mid-century margarita glasses. Additionally, thanks to the extendable tabletop, it seats anywhere from four to eight people. Just install the hidden leaf for holidays and gatherings. We love that the leaves also nestle into a hidden tray beneath the tabletop when not in use, freeing up additional storage space.

Overall, we find it worth the slightly higher price point, especially if you’re looking for an option built to last through years of dinner parties and daily use.
